UR communion with the Lord Jefus, as to that grace of fanftification, and purification, whereof we have made mention in the feveral diflinetions, and degrees thereof formerly,- is next, to he confidered. And herein the former method muff be obferved; and we muff Gew, r. What are the peculiar allings of the Lord Chrift as to this com- munion. And, a. What is the duty of the Saints herein ; the fain is, how we hold communion with Chrift in holinefs, as well as in riglhteoufnefs, and that very briefly. r. There are feveral ads afcribed unto the Lord Jefus in reference to this particular. As, (i.) His interceding with the father, by virtue of his oblation in the behalf of his, that he would bellow the Holy Spirit on them. Here I choofe to enter, becaufe, of the oblationof Chrift itfelf I have fpoken be- fore. Otherwife every thing is to he run up to that head, that fource and fpring. There lies the foundation of all fpiritual mercies whatever, as af- terwards alfo Gall be manifeffed. Now the Spirit, as unto us, a Spirit of grace, holinefs, and confolation, is of the purchafe of Chrift. It is upon the matter, the great promife of the new covenant, Ezek. xi. 19. I will put a new Spirit within you ; So alfo, Chap. xxxvi. v. 27. yerem. xxxii. 39, 40. and in fundry other places, whereof afterwards. Chrift is the mediator and furety of this new covenant, Heb. vii. 22. Jefus was made furety of a better teflament, or rather covenant. A teftament needs no lure ty. He is the undertaker on the part of God and man alfo. Of man to give fatisfaflion ; of God to bellow the whole grace of the promife, as, Chap. ix. 15. For this taufe he is the mediator of the new tefament, that by means of-death, for the redemption of tranfgreJbns that were under the fir/I tellament, they which are called, might receive the promife of eternal inheritance. He both fatisfied for fin, and procured the promue. He procures all the love and kindnefs, which are the fruits of the co- venant ; being himfelf the original promife thereof, Gen. iii. 16. The whole being fo ordered in all things, and made fure, 2 Sam. xxiii. 5. that the refidue of its effe&s, Gould all be derived from him, depend
