each PERSbN clifiZYdaly, 31-7 is the miftake, the foundation of this communion is laid in that, which they fuppofe it overthrows. (2.) But what Gall we fay for obedience ? If Chrift be fo glorified arid honoured by taking our fins, the more we bring to him, the more will he be glorified. A man could not fuppofe that this objeftion would be made, but that the Holy Ghoft, who knows what is in man, and his heart, hath made it for them, and in their naine, Rom. vi. t, a, 3. The very faine do- &rine that I have infifted on, being delivered, Chap. v. 18, 09, 20. The faine objection is made to it ; and for thofe who think it may have any weight, I refer them ro the anfwer given in that chapter by the apoftle, as alto to what was faid before to the neceffity of our obedience, notwithftand- ing the imputation of the righteoufnefs of Chrift. But you will fay, How Gould we addrefs our felves to the performance of this duty? What path are we to walk in ? Faith exercifes it's felf in it efpecially three ways. [t.] In meditation. The heart goes over in its own thoughts the part above infifted on, fometimes feverally, fometimes jointly, fometimes fixing primarily on one thing, fometimes on another, and fometimes going over the whole. At one time perhaps the foul is molt upon confideration ofits own finfulnefs, and filling it felf with Ihame, and felf-abhorrency on that account ; fometimes it is filled with the thoughts of the righteoufnefs of Chrift, and with joy unfpeakable, and glorious on that account, efpecially on great occaions, when grieved and burthened by negligence, or eruption of corruption, then the foul goes over the wholework, and fo drives things to an iffue with God, and takes up the peace that Chrift bath wrought out for him. [a.]' In confidering and inquiring into the promifes of the Gofpel, which hold out all thefe things ; the excellency, fulnefs, and fuitablenefs of the righteoufnefs of Chrift, the rejeÈtion ofall falfe righteoufnefs, and the com- anutationmade in the loveof God, which was formerly infifted on. [3.] In prayer, herein do their fouls go through this work day by day. And this communion have all the faints with the Lord Jefus, as to their acceptation with God, which was the firft thing propofed to con- fideration. CHAP,
