350 Of COMMUNION with where alfo this whole matter is more fully opened. And this is to lie con- fidered in him by faith, in reference to the Spirit its felf. (3.) There is that, which we call habitual grace, that is, the fruits of the Spirit. The Spirit which is born of the Spirit, Joh. iii. 6. That which is born of, or produced by the-Holy Ghoft, in the heart or foul of a man when he is regenerate, that which makes him fo, is fpirit ; in oppofition to the flelh, or that enmity whirls is in us by nature againft God (e). It is, faith, love, joy, hope, and the reft of the graces of the Gofpel, in their toot or common principle. Concerning which, there two things are to be obferved. [h.] That though many particular graces are mentioned, yet there are not different habits or qualities'in us ; not feveral or diftinfi principles, to anfwer them; but only the fame habit or fpiritual principle, putting forth it felt in various operations, or ways of working; according to the variety of the objects which it goeth forth unto, is their common princi- ple (L). So that it is called and diflinguifhed as above, rather in refpeec of aftual exercife, with relation to its objefts, than habitual inherence, it being one rout, which hath there many branches. ' [a.) This is that which I intend by this habit of grace. A (c) new gracious fpiritual (cl) life, or principle, (e) created, and (f) bellowed On the foul, whereby it is (g) changed in all its faculties and affections, fit- ted, and enabled to go forth, in the way of obedience, unto every divine objeft, that is propofed unto it, according to tine mini of God. For in- fiance ; the mind can difeetn of (h) fpiritual things in fpiritual stunner, and therein it is light, illumination. The whole foul clofeth with Chrift, as held forth in the proiuifes of the Gofpel'foc righteoufnefs and falvation, that is faith, which being the isohn and principld work of it, it often gives denomination unto the whole. So when it 'refts in God, in Chrift, with delight, defire, and complacency, it is called love, being indeed the princi- ple fuiting all the faculties of our fouls for fpiritual and living operationb according to their natural ufe. New it differs; r.) From the Spirit dwelling in the faints-,,..for it is a created quality. 'flae Spirit dwells nn us as a free agent in an holy habitation. This grace as a quality, remains in us, as in its own proper fubjeft, that bath not any fubfiflence but therein, and is capable of being intended or reltrained under great variety ofdegrees. a.) From aftual grace which is tranlent, this making its refidence in the foul. (O A&uai grace is an elapfe of divine influence and aíhftance, working in and by the foul, any fpiritual aa4 or duty whatfoever, without any pre-exiftenCe unto that aft or continuance after it, God working in ris, both to will and to do. But this habitual grace is always refident in us, caufing the foul to be a meet principle for all thole holy and fpiritual ope- rations, which by afoul grace are to be performed. And; 3.) It is capable of augmentation and diminution, as was laid. In frene it is more large and more effeftual than in others ; yea in foin pesions more at one thine than another.
