But here lies the difficulty, in the intangling oppofitionthat is made by the rebellion of this law of fin. Neither is it expreffible with whatvigour and variety fin ales itfelf in this matter. Sometimes it propofeth diverfions, fometimes it caufeth wearinefs, fometimefs it finds out difficulties, fometirnes it ftirs. up contrary affeflions, fometimes it begets prejudices, and one way or other intangles the foul, fo that it never fuffers grace to have an abfolute and compleat fuccefs in any duty. ver.. a. 4.3 s s¡yd;e:9xm r; x¢n3v &no iupowo, I find not the way perfelly to work out, or accomplish that which is good; fo the word fignities ; and that from this oppofition and re- finance that is made by the law of fin. Now this rebellion appears in in two things. r.] In the oppofition that it makes unto the general purpofe and courfe of the foul. 2.1 In the oppofition it snakes unto particular duties.. ' o.1 In the oppofition it makes to the general purpofe and courfe of the foul. There is none in whom is the fpirit of Chrifl, that is his,' but it ishis general deign and "purpofe to walk in an univerfal conformity unto him in all .things. Even from the inward frame of the heart, to the whole compafs of his outward a&ions, fo. it is with him. This God re- quires in his covenant,. Gen. xvat. r. Walk before me and be thou perfell. Accordingly his defign is to walk before God, and his frame is fincerity and uprightnefs therein. This is called, cleavingunto the Lord withpurpofe of heart, Alls "xi. 23. that is, in all things; and that not with a floath- ful, dead, ineffllual purpofe; but fuels as is operative and fers the whole foul at work in purfuit ofit. This the apoftle fets forth, Phil. iii. 12, 53, 14. Not as though I hadalready attained, either were alreadyperfec'l; but Ifol- low after, if that I may apprehendthat for which alfo I am apprehended of Chrifl 7efus. Brethren, I count not my Pelf. to have . apprehended, but this one thing I do, forgetting thofe things which are behind, and reach- ingfirth unto thofe things which are before, Iprefs toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in ;Chrifl jefirs. He,ufeth three words excellently exprelling the foul's univerfal purfuit of this purpofe of heart in cleaving unto God. Firft, faith he, dtéxui ver, r2. I follow after, prrfecute; the word fignifies properly to perfecute, which with what earneftnefs and diligence it is ufually done, we know. Secondly, Ëeoxza i,s,dai; I reach forward, reaching with great intention of fpirit and affections. It is a great and conftant endeavour, that is expreiTed in that word. Thirdly, +tg.ni essaim flíxw; fay we, I preis towards the mark, that is, even as men that are ranging for a prize. All fet forth the vi- gour, earneftnefs, diligence and conftancy that is ufed in the purfuit of this purpofe. And this the nature of the principle of grace requiretli in them in whom it is. But yet we fee with what failings, yea fallings, their purfuit of this courfe is attended. The frame of the heart is changed, the heart is flollen away, the affeelions intangled, eruptions of unbelief and diftempered paflions difcovered, carnal wifdom with all his attendances are fet on work, all contrary to the general principle and purpofe of the foul. And all this is from the rebellion of this law of fin, furring up and .provoking the heart unto difobédience.. The prophet gives this charafeer'of hypocrites, Hof. x. 2. Their heart is divided, therefore ßiall they' be found faulty. Now though this be wholly fo in refped of the mind and judgment in hypocrites only; yet it is partially fo in thebell, in tire, fenfe defcribed. They have a divifion, not of the heart, but in the heart; Nnnnn and
