Let us confider then, whether the infinitely Wife and Ho- ly God, puifuing his purpofe of bringing fill! unto himj lf, Lying afide one way of his own appointment as ufeleß, and infirm, becaufe of the coming in of fin, againfi which there was no relief found in it, and fabfrituting another way in the room of it ; would not provide fuch an one, as fhould be abfolutell free from the faults and inconveniencies, which he charged upon that, which he did remove. That which alone rendred the former way faulty was fin; it could do any thing but fave a (inner; this then was to be, and is principally pro- vided againtt in thin way of Forgiveneß. And we fee here, how clearly God bath fevered, yea and in this matter oppojed thefe two things, (i.) Namely, the way of perjlnal Righteouf- neß, and the way of forgivetacJ?. He finds fault with the firfl ; what then doth he do ? what courfe doth he take ? doth he mend it, take from it what teems to be redundant, mitigate its feverity, and fupply it where it was wanting, by Forgive- nefs, and fo fet it up anew ? This indeed is the way that ma- ny proceed in in their notion!, and the moll in their pratìice,. But this is not the way of God. He takes the one utterly away, and efiablifhes the other in its place.
