This alone will give you fetch Motives and Encourage- ments unto Obedience, as will give you Life, Alacrity, and Dc- light in it. You performDuties, abliain from fns, but with heavinefs, fear, and in bondage. Could you do as well with- out them, as with them, would Confcience be quiet, and hope of Eternity hold out, you would omit them for ever. This makes all your Obedience burdenfome, and you cry out in your thoughts with him in the Prophet, behold what a weari- neß it is ! the fervice of God is the only drudgery of your lives, which you dire not omit, and delight nor to perform. From this wretched and curled frame, there is nothing can deliver you, but this doling with forgiveneß. This will give you fuch motives, fuch encouragements, as will greatly in- fluence your hearts and iòuls. It will give you freedom, lib:rty, delight, and chearfulnefs in all duties of Gofpel Obedience. You will finde a conftraining power in the love of Chrifi there- in ; a freedom from bondage , when the Son truely bath made you free. Faith and love will work genuinely and na- turally in your fpirits ; and that which was your great-elf bur- den, will bcome your chiefeff joy: 2 Cor. 7. r. Thoughts of the Love of God, of the Blood of Chrilk, or the Covenant of Grace, and fence of pardon in them, will enlarge your hearts, and fzveeten all your duties. You will find a new life, a new pleafure, a new fatisfalion, in all that you doc: Have you yet ever underflood that of the Wifeman, Prov. 3. 17. The wayes of Wifdom are pleafantneß, and her paths are peace ? Have the wayes of Holynefs, of Obedience, of Duties been fo unto you ? Whatever you pretend, they are not, they cannot be fo, whild you are _grangers unto that which alone can render them to unto you.
