302 Di crent Ef=eU.r of Vnbelief and yealotsfie. Pfal. I 3 a MEOW Plainly, wì ;h a bondage frame of Spirit, without Love, Joy, L-berty,or Delight ; To quiet confCience, to pacifie God, are the things in them ay tried at all in oppotition to the Blood and Righteoufnefs of Chritl. And are they accepted with God ? Let them be multipyed never to much, he every where tctfifieth that they are abhorred by him. This then Vnkteliofmixed with convidions will do. It is the proper way of venting and ex- ercifng it fclf where the foul is brought under the power of conviflron. But as unto Gofpeh Obedience in all the duties of it, to be carrycd on in communion with God by Chritl, and de- light in him, all gnellioning of the promifes weakens and dii courageth he foul, and makes them all wearifome and burden- fome unto it. But the lea/et/lie that is exercifed about the Perfon and Lore of Chri]t unto the foal, is quite of another nature, and pro- duceth other effcds. It cheers, enlivens, and enlargeth the foul, airs up to at livity, earnefinefs, and indutiry in its enquiries and decires after Chritl. Jealoufie, faith the Spoufe, is bard as the grave, therefore fet me as a Seal upon thy heart, as a Seal upon thy arm. It makes the foul retflefly pant after necrer more fenfi- ble and more affured Communion with Chritl ; It firs up vigo- rous and aliveSpirits in all duties. Every doubt and fear that it ingenerates concerning the Love of Chritl, airs up the foul unto more earnefinefs after him, delight in him, and fedulous watchingagainfi every thing that may keep it at a dittance from him, or occafion him to hide, withdraw, or abfent himfelf from it. 2. Vnbeliefthat work, by queftioning of the promifes, is uni- verfally fel fifb ; it begins and ends in felt. Self-love, in defines after freedom from guilt, danger and punifhment, arc the life and foul of it. May this end be attained, it bath no delight in God. Nor doth it care what way it be attained fo it may be attained. May fuch perlons-have any perfwafions that they íhall befreedfrom death and bell, be it by theworks ó f the Law, or by the obfervancc of any inventions of their ewn, whether anyGlory arifeth unto God from his Grace and faithfulnefs or so, they arenot folicitous. The Jealoufre we fpcak of bath the Perfon of Cbriff and his Excellency
