Expec`ation in Oppofition to dfair, dittrutt, andother proper immediate aóings of unbelief. Y. &uietnefs, Hence this waiting it felt is fometimes expref fed byfrlence. To wait, is to be filent, Lam. 3. 6. It is good both to hope, r=1;11.11. and to be filent for the falvation of the Lord; that is, to wait quietly, as we have rendred, the word. And thefame word we render fometimes to r(jf, as Pfrl. 37.7. Refit on the Lord, L711 be filent unto him ; where at is joyned with hoping or waiting, as that which belongs unto the nature of it ; and fo in fundry other places. And this God in an efpecial manner calleth fouls unto in (fraigbts anddiffreffes. In quiernífs and confidence; faith he, /bail beyour jfrength, Ifa. 3o. 15. And theeffe& of the Righteoufnefs of God by Chrift, ss faid to be Quietnefs and Affurance for ever, Ifa. 3 a. 17. Fiat iietnefs, and thenAffurance. Now this Pence and quietnefs which accompanieth waiting, yea which is an effential part of it, is oppofed firft to Haffe; and Hafte is the fouls undue lifting up its felf, proceeding from a wearinefs of its condition, to prefs after an end ofits troubles, not according to the conduct$ of the Spirit ofGod. Thus when God calleth his people to waiting, he expref eth the contraryaóing unto this duty, by the lifting up of the foul, Hab. 2. 3, 4. Though the vifion tarry, wait for it ; behold hìi f ul which it lifted up is not upright in him, but the Dufffhall live byfaith. God hath given unto the foul a vifion of Peace, through the, difcovery of that forgivenefs which is with-him ; but he will have us wait for an a6ual participa- tion of it unto reft and comfort. He that will not do fo, but lifts up hi, foul, that is, in malting haffe beyond the Rule and Me- thod of the Spirit of God in this matter, hir heart it not upright in bun, nor will he knowwhit it is to live byfaith. This ruines and difappoints many a foul in its attempts for forgivenefs. The Prophet fpeaking of this matter, tells us,- that He that be- lieveth fhall not, nor will not matte hffe; Ifà. -28. 16. Which words the Apoffle twice making ufe of, Rom. 9.33, chap. ro, i r. in both places renders them, Wh,ofoever believetb on bin; Oanot A a a 2 be , Waiting on God whercin it conuìlis. ',
