368 Waiting on God wherein it con(fis. I-fàl. i 30. verf. 4. She found him, fhe held him, fie would not let him go. This then belongs unto the waiting of the foul. Del genre in the u'e of means, whereby God is pleafed ordinarily to corn- traunica e a fink of pardon and forgivencfs is a principal part of it. What thefe means are, is known. Prayer, Meditation, Reading, Hearing of the Word, D,fpenfation ofthe Sacraments, they are all appointed to this purpofe ; they are all means of communicating Love and Grace to the foul. Be not then heartlefs or fc,thfui! ; up and be doing ; attend with diligence to the Word of Grace; be fervent in prayer, affiduous in the ufe of all Ordinanccsof the Church, in one or other of then, at one time or ocher thou wilt meet with himwhem thy foui loveth; and God through himwill (peak peace unto thee. Thirdly, There is Expectation in it, which lyes in a direei; oppofitïon to all the adings ofunbelief in this matter, and is the very life and foul of the duty under confideration. So the Pfal- mrit declares it, Pfd. 62.5. My foul, wait thou only upon God for my expectation is onlyfrom him. The foul will not, cannot in a due manner wait on God, unlefs it bath Expeaations from him ; unlefs, as James (peaks, he looks to receive fomewhat fr9m him, chap. t. 7, The foul in this condition regards forgivenefs, not only as by its felt it is dcfired, but principally as it is by Gc d promifed. Thence they expea it. This is exprefed in the foi rthPropofition before laid down, namely, that fin-difireffed fouls waitfor Godwith earne(inefs, intention ofmind, and expcF,ta- tion. As this arifeth from the redoubling ofthe Exprtfi'ion ; fo principally from the nature of the Conipar fozi that he makes ofhimfelf in his waiting with them that watch for the morning. Thofe that watch for the morning do-not only delire it, and prepare for it, but they expert it, and know affuredly that it will come. Thoughdarknefs may for a time be troubiefome, and continue longer than they would defire, yet they know that the morning hath its appointed time of return, beyond which it will not tarry; and therefore they look out for its Appearance onall occafions : fo it is with the foul in this mat- ter. So, (ayes David, Pfal. 5.3. I will dire&mypray;r unto thee 1'7 and loom up. So we ; the words before are defer` ive ? 17,i1!3'..4 -0.3 in the morning, or rather every morning, 1 will
