the Fps/le to the G,eletian.t Chap. S. Thus muchofthe combate, thevfefollowes ., Hence I ga- ther, that concupifcence or lullafter baptifme, in the regene- rate, is a fume. For the lull of thefpirit, is the thing that God requireth andapprooueth : now the lull ofthe flefh is dire& í lycontrarie to it, as a dcfeft or privation thereof : and there- fore the luft of the flefh is properly a finne, whether content ofwill goe with it, or no. Againc , hence it followcs, that workes of the regenerate, are mixedworkes, that is, good workes indeed , yet not per- t o feUlygood, but party euill: for fuel: as the caufe is, fuck is the effca : now the tnindeandwill of man , are the caufe of his workes, and the mind ispartly car nall, and partly fpirituall : fo alto is thewill : and therefore the workes that proccede from them, arepartly fpirituall, & in part carnall.Vpon this ground ti S it followes, that all the workcs ofregenerate men, are finfull, and in the rigourof iuílicedeferue damnation. Objet!. Sinne is the tranfgretiionof the law : good workesarc no tranfgrdflì- on of the law : thereforegoodworkes arcno finnes . I anfwer to the minor. The tranfgrelronof the law is twofold : One , zo which is direflly againft the law, both for matter, and manner: the fecond is, when that is done which the law requires, but not in that manner it fhould be done. And thus good workes become tinfull.Thedutic which the lawreguires,is donc, but it is not doneperfetly as it ough tobe done, by reafon of the ZS flefh. Secondly, it is alleagcd that good workes are from the fpirit ofG od : and that nothing proceedingfrom the fpirit of God is fume. 4 f. Things proceedingfrom the fpirit of God alone, or from the fpirit immediatly, areno firmes :now good workes proceed not only from the fpirit , but alto from the 3o mind andwill ofman, as inflruments ofthe fpirit. And when an effeft proceedes from fundrie caufes that are fubordinate, it takesvnto it thenatureofthe fecondcaufe : hereupon workes are partly fpirituall, aad partlycarnall,as the minde andwill of the doer is. Thirdly,it is alleged , thatgoodworkspleafe God: 3 3 and that things pleating God, are ,no firmes./Inf. They pleafe God ;.becaufe the doer is in Chrifl, and fo pleafcth God . A- gaine, they pleafenot Godbefore, or without pardon: for they are accepted, becaufeGod approoueshis owne worke invs, & pardons thedefat thereof. Lafily, Tome °hie& on this man- ner. No firmes are to be lone: good workes are finnes : there- 'G gg a fore
