For in the time of troublehe Jliall hide me in his pa- vilion : in thefecret ofhis tabernacle ¡ballhe hide me ; he'ballfet me upupon a rock; A Reafon ofDavid: earneft defire to dwell in Gods The meaning houfe forever , drawn from the benefit offafety, and ofthe words: fecurity,there to be found in timeóf trouble. Whichbenefit is here expreffed , under a double ac`lion of God : Firft, biding in htspavilion, andfecret ofhis tabernacle : Secondly, fetttng upupona rock. For the better conceiving whereof we mutt know, that by Gods pavilion Davidmeanies the LordsTabernacle, and his dwellingplace in Sion. And the fecret ofhis Tabernacle was the molt Hòlyplace,where the Cherubims fpread their wings, over themercy feat , theco- ver of the Ark of the covenant, whither indeed David might not go perfonally , as wemay feeby Heb 9.8. and Levit. 16. 2. but aimeth at that , which thofe things did fhadow out,namely, fpeciall providence,and protec`}ion for fafety : as Pfal. 91. I, 4. and 61. 3, 4. Thofe places in- deed were generally taken for places offafety, as may ap- pearby the fadof Adonijah, i Kings 1. 5o, 51. and of loab, i Kings 2.28.and by thechargeof 7ehoiadah the high Prieft, 2 Kings i r. 15. The ground whereofis thought to be (betides reverenceofGods prefence) Gods ordinance in- theWilderneffe , that theTabernacle of the congregation ihould be a fanetuary, for that time, as thecities of refuge wereafterward : as is gathered by Exod. 2 i , 13, 14. So that here Davidafïureshimfelf, that being a truemember ofGods Church , his grace and favour, power andprovi- dence íhould be , as the Lords pavilion and as the fecret placeof his tabernacle ; evena fure and fafe place offafety, and fecurity tohim. And likewife as a rock , that is high and itrong, doth give fafety and fecurity tohim that isfet thereon ,'` from theviolent al'ault ofall malicious enemies : fotheLords power, and favour, would become themeans offafety untoDavid: who thereupondoth ufually call the G Lord
