It is true force Scriptures Teem to lay much upon affent thus we find,If thou (halt confefß with thy mouth theLord Jefiu.,andJhalt believe in thy heart, that God loath raifed him from the dead, thou 'halt be Paved, Iiom.ro.9. And,whofoever believeth, that Jefas ii the Chrifl, is born of God, z Joh. And, thefe things are written, thatye might be- lieve that Jefas is the Chríjl the Son r f God, and that believing you might have life through his name, Joh.2o.5 i. But thefe places import not as if a naked affent were the full condition of Gofpel- grace, for then a man might befaved in his lins, _a man in arms againft his maker might 'ftaind ; Gods grace might embrace him whom his holinefs abhors, and Chrift might fave him who will not have him reign over him; light might be in communion with darknefs, and Chrift might have concord with Belial ; all which are impoflibles in themfelves, and in- compoflibles with the defign of the Gofpel but they intend fuch an affent as is in conjunti- on with a true relignation of the heart to the terms of the Gofpel.
