If the Church hath Authority to define the Canon, it muff have it from Scripture, and then the Scripture muff have Authority even quoad nos before that Definition ; unlefs they will abfurdly diflinguith and fay That the Scripture- Authority before the Definition, is only as to Parlors, and not as to Believers till after it. All the Churches Authority is from Scripture, and How can the derivative Au- thority add to the Primitive ? The Scripture, is Principium fcientiftcum, and therefore to be received by its light without a quare, or rea- fon why it is fo; the Scripture is a Foundation to the Church, Lpb. 2. 20. and fuch a one that the Church is no further a Church than as it is built thereon ; and How can the Church be a Foundation to the Scripture ? The Scrip- ture is a Law to the Church, every Soul muff be under it ; and How can the Subjet - Church give Authority to the Law which it Self is under ?
