338 Pair= ,daft». no fuch charafters or holy inclinations there, his Heart was worfe than a meer empty Ta- ble : And hence he Purely gathers, that thofe characters or imprinted propenfities are the writing of God himfelf; and fo comes expe- rimentally to know the Epiftle of God in Scripture by that in his Heart, and the out- ward literal Edition of the Law by the inward Spiritual one, which is a counterpane thereof, and anfwers thereunto as the Ramp to the Seal, or one Tally to another. The mutual agree- ment between them once difcerned is a praci- cal proof; that both are of God, and written by one and the fame holy hand. But you will fay, there needs no Faith to make this expe- riment; the very Gentiles have the Law writ- ten in their Heart , their natural implanted Principles comprize both Tables ; the firfi in that they tell us,that there is a God to be wor- fhipped and reverenced ; The fecond in that they tell us, That we muff do as we would be done to ; which Alexander Severus much de- lighted in. Unto which I anfwer, That there is a vet difference between the natural Writing the Law in the Heart, and the gracious ; The firft is a relique or broken fragment of the Di- vine Image ; its only or at leaf( chief feat is in the Underftanding, and there it (lands in the dark in an abyfs of black Ignorance; and in the mean while there is an hellifh enmity in the carnal Will againfi the Law of God.
