The Fathers Eternal Joy and Splendor lay for a time in a dark Eclipfe of Sorrow and Defertion, as one forfaken of God, that we `might not be call out into utter darkuefs; and bled and died on a Crois as one accur fed of God, to keep us from bleeding in eternal flames, and to purchafe a place in Glory for us. And all this in outward Elements is not only limmed out and figured to our fenfes, but fealed to our hearts, as that which we have a real (hare and interefl in.And what attra Lives and inflammatives are here ? Now, if ever, our Heart will breath out it fell in holy Raptures after Chrifl,and faint and fwoon away in Love- fick delires, till it can catch hold and embrace him, and fo tafle the rare Delights and Com- placencies of an Union with Him: And the greater thofe Complacencies are, the higher are the Defires; and reciprocally the higher the Defires, the greater the Complacencies ; till at tall the Believing Soul in rapes of Love breaks forth into Hofanna's and Hallelujahs, touching its great Redeemer.
