I an- fwer, It's true that it is not by an exprefs word ; but,as Learned Dr.YYard well obferves, The Queftion is not de modo Teflandi, but de Re. It is certain, there is fuch a Teflimony, and that proceeding from the Spirit of Truth muff be infallible ; and being made to our fpirit muff be known to us, and fo beget a true certainty in our hearts. The fame Spirit, which endited the Promifes of Pardon, and put them into Scripture ; Seals and in a way of appro- propriation puts them upgn the Heart ; as if it fhould fay ; This and that Promife is thine ; like that in the Prophet, Speak to her heart, that her iniquity is pardoned, Ifa. 40. 2. Now, when the Promifes come fo clofe and pour oht their fweetnefs into the heart, the Believer may not gufs only, but know, that true Faith and Repentance are there. God and his Promife fpeak peace only to Saints, and not a comfor- ta'le 409
