THus much touching the fiat thing, That Affurance is attainable : I now proceed to the other, viz. The ways in which it is at- tained. All which are as fo many further Ar- guments to prove it attainable. Were it not fo the All -wife God would not fet down ways for the attaining thereof. Impoffibles are not to be fought after. Aiflirance, how- ever difficult, is not imponible : The Scrip- ture hath chalked out a Method how to arrive at it; Which I (hall endeavour to open in the enfuing Difcourfe. In the firft place : He who would attain Affit- rance, mutt give Grace and Chrift their due. All fpiritual Bleffings grow upon, Grace as an eternal Root, and hang upon Chrift as the Tree of Life. In particular, Affurance is a Bleffing proper to the Covenant of Grace. In the Covenant of Works there was no Affu- rance or Perfeverance, becaufe the whole ma- nagery was left to Mans Will : But in the Cove- nant of Grace thefe are to be found in Belie- vers, becaufe God undertakes the work. This is the rather to be marked, becaufe man under the Covenant of Works was in a ftate of Inno- cency
