The Cup of DCefing. I lookea1 and Taw a pale horfé , and the name of him that rode on him ma Death, and behind hint followed Hell : That is, Hell is the hooke that is hid in death, when we are once taken with that hcoke, we are kept there for ever: if Death fhould come without hell, it were ano- ther matter, Death is but the lightning, it is Hell that is the cracke of thunder : and fhall we like children be a- fraid of the lightning, and not be afraid of the bolt It is hell that is the gate that keeper us for ever, Death is but the arreft, that carries us thither. Therefore con- fider what it is to be fúbject to hell ; as our Saviour faith, What will that wattle a man to wit; the whole world, and loft his Cottle ? Confider well of that fpeech, What will that availe you to Lave all things elk if you lofe your foulest' as if a man fhould fave the paring of his nailes, and lofe his fingers;as if he fhould fave his thooe, and lofe his feote; as if he thould fave the íhip, and lofe the fraught; as if he fhould Cave the houfe, and deftroy the man that dwells in it fo it is to fave other things, and lofe the foule : No, it is the terrible thing, Hell, that foilowes Death : in another .miferies, yet this is our comfort, that death will come in the end, and put a full point and period to them ; but this fecond death, Hell, is fuck a death , as bath no other death to end it: Therefore,as we fay, But for hopethe heart would breake; finely there is no hope , and therefore there is a break- ing of the foule,as well as tormentof the body: There- fore confider what Hell is, what eternity is, this is the rnifery wee are in out of Chrifi , you are fubjet to the feare of death, you are lubjet to death, and,to Hell too: Death is but the (talking- houfe, it is Hell that is the Fowler , that hath the pecce and the Lhot to deftroy.us utterly. 511 SeR.
