Pauls Converfion. like the Loadit one , that will not reit till it bath toucht the Lion; or as the needle touched, will not Rand till it touch the North- pole : So it is with this godly forrow, when a man bath received but a touch of the fpirit, he will never refs till he hath toucht Chrift : till he be at peace with him, no- thing will fatisfie him till Chrift come into the Soule, till Chrift be his : nothing will make him to remove that confidence; and truft, that he bath in Chrift, all things fhall goe for Chrift. But the worldly forrow bath another fucceffe : namely, to flye fatter away from God ; as I have fhowed in Iudoi and Cain. And thus much for this que- ftion. The fixe quetfion is this , feeing the obje61 of godly forrow is finne; whether there be any de- grees of this godly forrow. To this I anfwer, that howfoever finne is the chiefeif caufe of godly farrow, yet notwith(lan- ding it admits of degrees, there are divers degrees according unto the apprehenfion of the thing conceived : fome forrow more, and fame leffe ac- cording to the proportion of grace received, eve- ry one in one degree or other, but the caufe in eve- ry one,is properly finne, but thefe degrees of for- row proceed from a three-fold caufe. Firft, be- caufe God will give more grace unto one,then un- to another; where he doth intend to make a great building of grace, there he will lay a deep:: foun- dation of godly forrow : and on the contrary, where he doth intend to bellow leffe grace, there a E e 2 1effer 199
