(hall proceed from another ground; namely,from the fpirit of Adoption, whereby you shall feare him, not as a Iudge, but as a Father : therefore let every -man enter into his owne heart: and fee whe- ther this condition be in him, or no, and thinke not to come into Chrift , or to bee ingrafted into Chrift without it : for as I laid , howfoever it is not fiìnply neceffary, on Gods part; yet it is ne- ceffary on our parts, becaufe wee will not receive Chrift,and the Gofpell, till we bethorowly hum- bled. And that you may fee the neceffity of this duty of humiliation : I will Phew you in five par- ticulars that a man cannot receive the Gofpell ex- cept he be humbled. Firft, a man or woman muff be humble, or elfe he will not receive Iefus Chrift. To receive Iefus Chrift , is the fiat ad of the Gofpell : and there- fore we preach the Gofpell generally unto all, that whofoever will, may have Chrift : but you muff firft receive him,and this you will not doe till you be humbled; till yee thinke you (land in need of Chrift , till then , you will thinke the worke too great, and wages too (mall; as for example, A woman muff firfl receive her husband , and bee united unto him , before f hee can be made partaker , either o f his riches , or honour : fo before a Chriflian can bee made partaker of the benefits of Chrift, bee muff deny himfelfe, and cleave wholly unto Chrift : and re- ceive him fo , u to be ruled by him , and to fuller for him.
