The Lord fetceth himfelfe to Judy and contrive mercie for his people , that as they fit up their finnes, as it were, in pride topofe his Covenant; Co he gathereth together his thoughtsofmercy, as it were, toconquer their Nines. Thirdly, there is congancie andcontinuance in this his Care : His mercy endtereth, hrs compaffions failsnot, but arerenewed every morning. And therefore the mercies of David, that is, of Chrifl, for fo he is called, or themer- cies of the Covenant made withDavid, arecalled Sure mercies, they have a foundation,the everlafling love and counfell of God upon which they are built, they have many feales by which theyare confirmed, the faithful- neffe, the immutabilicie, and the oath of God : Ifthere were not continuancein his mercies, if he were not the fame yeflerday, and to day, and for ever in his truth and fidelitie to his Church ; if hee fhould change and turnefrom us, asoft aswe forfake him,ifhe fhould leave us in thehand of our owne counfell, and not afford us fuch daily fupplies of his Spirit, as might fupport us againfl the ruinous difpofitionof our owne nature, wee fhouldbe children of wrath every day anew. But here- in doth the abundant care of Chriffin the Gofpell de- clare it Idle unto us, that though we are worries inour (elves, full ofweakneffe, and ofearthly affeaions, yet God hath a right-hand of?them*Ire, which can up- hold us; that though we are bent to back-fliding,yet he is Godandnot man, unchangeable in his Covenant with the Perfons, almighty inhis power and mercy towards, the finnes ofmen, both to cover them with his righte- oufneffe, and to cure them by his Spirit, both to forgive for the timepail, and to heals and prevent back-flidings for the time to come.
