Ifa man could powre outof his veines rivers ofbloud, and offer up every day as many prayers as thoughts untoGod, if his eyes were melted into teares, andhis knees hardned into home with devotion; yet all this, if it benot the fruit of holineffe, but of will-worfhip, or fuperflition, or opinionof merit and righteoufnefl'e, it is but as dung inGods fight. Wherefore /leg thouupon thyface, there is an accurfed thingin the campe ? What-ever finne thy confcience tels thee lyeth next thyheart, and warmer it, fo that thouart unwilling to part from it, take heedof bringing it into Gods pretence, or provoking him with thy fervices, for he will throw them backe likedung into thy face.
