C N A P.I. Epi fi le to the The/%slonian.r. V fi á. IO. 55 the firfl veritie, the truth of God the Reuealer ; this being the thing which makes him affent, becaufe God ,fpeakes and teaifies ir. Infufed its called, either by allu(ion to the g phrafe of the holyGhoff; or becaufe its meerely from without, there being no power Naturall in man to procure or receiue it, faue onely that which they rearme obedi- entiall : whereby man,as other creatures, is borne to obey Gods A6ion, or his working vpon him,ro bemade what - foeuer he may be made by diuine power. Of faith iníufed, they make two kindes : one formed, as their tearme is, by Charitie : the other formelefle , fe- perate from Charitie, which they call formeleflè, not becaufe it lacks matter or forme, or any thing required to the nature of Faith : for euen this Faith, they fay, is perfea quoadlpeciam : and is tt ue faith in genere 2Catura - mo rt ; that is, hath the true nature of Faith, anti is a vertuous qualicie. But formelefte they call it, when feparate from Charitie, becaufe it wants what fhould forme it to the na- ture of a gratuitous or gracious gift,or fit it to atcliieue the fuperexcedent End,eternall Beatitude; or as Scots rearmes are, it wants what fhould forme it to Acceptabilitie ; or as h Bellarmine to make it A6uous and operatiue. In all this, fetting apart firangencffe of Language, and their fecret intention of making Charitie enter our lulhfi_ cation, me thinks the fentence is orthodox, and confonant to Scriptures :faith fauing worker by loue, Gal. 5.6. And if a man fay he hath faith, and hate no work '.c, i can that faith fate him ' Thus vnderfland the Apoflle. Allthat beleeue, I fay not quocunque modo, fuppofe by faithAcquifite,as di- uels, and many profeffed i,hrifiians;or by faith dead, and vnoperatiue;but al that beleeue with that faith which works by loue; to all fuch belongs the glorie of Gods Kingdome. Or, what if we call to minde the three incernall Ac`Is of Faith ? which Thomas faith are all aè1s of one and the fame . habit of Faith : z To beleeue God fpeaking in his word. 2 To beleeue that he is God,and a rewarder of them that feeke him. 3 To beleeue in God; that is, as I interpret; to ref and relve our felues by confidence and affiance, on g loci 2.2g. r.
