PRINCE OF PEACE. 193 which is, King of Peace.* If the Type could deferve the Name, in reference to Jefus ; how much more juftly does the Appellation belong to the great Anti- type himfelf? If an earthly Prince could bear the De- nomination, as a facred Teftimony of future Grace from Heaven ; how properly does it pertain to theLord Jefus, who is the Prince of the Kings of the Earth,-{- and who can make his Redeemed to be Kings and Priefts unto GOD and bis Father too ? Chrift not only can make Peace and give Peace; but is effentially and truly Peace itfelf. For, whatever can be confidered as an Attribute in GOD, that GOD is. His PerfeEtions are himfelf. The Apoftle fays,CHRÍse as our Peace. $ And if Chrift give his Peace unto his People, he confequently gives himfelf to them. This Gift of himfelf to his People confifts in his Union with them. Upon this Account, he requefts in his laft folemn Prayer, that they all may be ONE in the Father and in himfelf, and that both 'the Father's Love may be in them, and that himfelf might be in them.§ Hence, he defcribed himfelf, as the Vine td them ; and they as the' Branches in him. So Iikewife, the Apoftle repre- fents him, or rather follows the prophetical Reprefen- tation of him, as the Hufband of his Church, and as the Head of the Body. And indeed (as Bithop Hall well exprefïes it) " no natural Body is more one than " this . myftical : One Head rules it ; one Spirit ani- " mates it; one Set of Joints moves it ; one Food nou- " tithes it; oneRobe covers, it. It is one in itfelf; and. " fo one with Chrift, as Chrift is one with the Father." From this again we may perceive, why the Peace of Chri is without End, becaufe he is without End ; and why the Peace of Chrift cannot be loft from the Re- deemed, becaufe he, their Head and their Hùftand, can never be loft. * Heb. vii z.
