NAME pr THE LORD. 249 The Names of GOD were intended to communicate the Knowledge of GOD Himfelf. By thefe we are enabled to form fume fcanty Ideas of his effential Majefty, Goodnefs and Power, and to know both in whom we are to believe, and what we are to believe óf Him. But the faving Knowledge of GOD, which widely differs from the ideal or fpeculative, is only at- tainable by JefusChr ; for no man knoweth the FATHER, in that mode, fave the Sox, and he to whomfoever the Sox will reveal him. * We could not know GOD, ideally, without the Medium of Words or Sounds ; becaufe we are animal, as well as fpiritual, Creatures: And we could never knowHim, favingly and to our comfort, without fuch a Medium as CHRIST ; becaufe we are fallen and finful Creatures. Hence he is of GOD to us all, that we can hope for or enjoy from GOD ; and we are in Him to GOD all, that his Sovereignty and Juftice can require of us. As the Phrafe, NAME OF THE LORD, is never doubted to belong to JEHOVAH OF HOSTS himfelf ; we may be fIre, if it be applied toCHRIST, thatHe is incon- teftably and really, with refpef to his fuperior Nature, true and very GOD. Nobody, believing the New Teftament, will deny, That Jefiss.Ch.rift is the Redeemer, who obtained eternal Redemption for his People. But, fans the Prophet, the NAME of Our REDEEMER iS JEHOVAH SABAOTH, the. Holy One of Ifrael. j- The NAME of CHRIST, therefore is JEHOVAH SABAOTH, or LORD OF HOSTS. The NAME OF THE LORD was to dwell among his People. But CHRIST, fays the Scripture, is to dwell in their Hearts by Faith. § CHRIST, therefore, ìs the NAME OF THE LORD. Is truf.}ing in the NAME OF THE LORD any Proof of the Divinity of that Name ? The very fame Confidence * Matt. xi. 27. f Ifliah xivii. 4 Deut. xii. 11. &c. &c. z Car. vi. 16. § Eph. iii. 17. IS
