What Latlantius faid of Wifdom, may with great Truth be faid of Grace, the higheft Wifdom ; non in Lingud, fed in Corde, It does not lay in the Tongue, but in the Heart. Befides ; 'tis no Part of a Chriftian's Bufinefs, be he in public or private Station, to 'hew bimfelf, and to difplay his own little Attainments (for theyare but little at the mot) His Duty it is to fpeak for his Malter, and even then with Meeknefs and with Fear. " The Soul (lays the excellent Archbifhop " ° Leighton), that hath the deepeft Senfe of fpiritual " Things and the true Knowledge of GOD, is moll " afraid to mifcarry in fpeaking of him, and is moll " tender and wary how to acquit itfelf, when engaged " to fpeak of and for him." * A Chriftian's Life does not confift in outward Difpute or Babbling, but in inward Faith and Joy : And the furet Way of lofing his own Comforts, is by an idle Debate, in which he would appear the first Aaor, and difplay his own Talents, under the Conceit of doing it for GOD. Non tali auxilio. Truth finds a better Advocate in the Heart and Life than in the Tongue. An Hypocrite may prate about the Gofpel ; but the real Chriftian alone can live the Gofpel. Never was the Pfalmift's Advice, and the Pfalmift's Practice, more neceffary than in the prefent Day ; Stand in Awe,. and fin not : commune withyour own Heart, and in your Chamber, and beftill. SELAH, i. e. " Note it well." The truly experimental Chriftian knows, by the Wit- nefs of GOD's Word withouthim, and by the Witnefs of GOD's Spirit, witnefling with his Spirit, within him, that, as his Life lies out of the World, fo it lies hid with Chrit, who will one Day make it appear in Glory.
