282 ANGEL, and ANGELof the COVENANT. but in the higheft Degree, the Name was applied to our bleffed Redeemer ; ,and, by it, he was known to the antient Church, before his Manifeftation in the Flefh. There are many Inftances in the Old Teftament, by which it is evident, that the Word ANGEL is applicable to none other Perfon or Being than the LORD of Life and Glory. Two or three Examples may fufl'ice. The ANGEL ofJEHOVAHfaid unto her [Hagar], Iwill multiply thy :Seed exceedingly, &c.. Gen. xvi. so. This is a Work of Creation and Providence, and therefore can be attributed to none, but JEHOVAH ALEHIM himfelf. In confequence, the Perfon, who could promife and perform this Work, was JEHÓVAH, or a Perfon in JE- HOVAH. A fùbfequent Verfe puts the Matter beyond all Doubt for /he called the NAME of the LORD, that fpake unto her, 514 rTrtK THou GOD. Again. And the ALEHIM beard the Voice of the Lad; and the ANGEL of the ALEHIM called to Hagar out of Heaven, and faid unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar ? Fear not; for the ALEHIM bath heard the Voice of theLad where be is. Arife, lift up the Lad, andbold him in thine Hand; for I WILL MAKE him agreat Na- tion. Gen. xxi. 17, 18. Here the ALEHIM and the. ANGEL of the ALEHIM are introduced as one Perfon, (peaking and promifing, * what none but JEHOVAH ALEHIM could really perform. * The Promife given to Hagar concerning lfhmael (Gen. xvi.. a.) is literally in force at this Day. The Arabs, who inhabit, or rather rove upon, the vast Trait of Country, betwixt,udva and Per /a, and who pique themfelves not a little upon their Defcent from Abraham through 1/hmael, are wild. Men indeed. Their Hand is again(# every Man, whole Engagements may induce him to pats over their inhofpitable Deferts, and, for his own Prefervation from Murder and Robbery, every Man's Hand mutt be againfl them. They never were, and probably never will be, reduced by any Nation : their Swiftnefs of Flight eludes all Parfait, and the Barrennefs of their Soil affords no Temptation of Conqueft to the TCurks and Perfians, their Neighbours and Enemies. Dr. Raimwoi who traverfed part of their Country, reprefents them in no better light than that of the molt lazy, thievifb, and favage Nation (if fuch a Banditti deferve the Name) upon the Face of the Earth.
