308 P R O P H E T . eels to his Preaching ; fo as that the WordJhould not re.. turn to him void, nor fail of accámplifhing the End, for which it was fent. Bleffed be GOD, our gracious Redeemer is to this Day the Teacher and the Prophet of his People. He points out to them the Way of Salvation through his holy Word, and opens their Underftandings, that they may underftand the Scriptures. Without his bleffed Teaching, all the Means of Grace are ineffeétual, and even a Paul might plant, and an ilpollos water, in vain. He fpake as never Man fpake, when upon Earth; and he prophefies or teaches his People, as no Man can teach, by his Spirit from Heaven. He preaches with his Minifters, giving their Word Derrzonftration and Power ; and he preaches in his People, applying that Word, with faving or re- vivingEfficacy, to their Hearts. Both, therefore, fhould be ever looking to him, the great PROPHET, the Shepherd, and Bithop of their Souls, for every Meafure ofGi£t and Grace, as well as for the Completion of Grace in ever- lafting Glory. He hath not faid to the Seed of grad, Seekye my Face in vain. The weakeft Believer is welcome to Chrifï. He that thinks he knows leaft, and is molt fenfible ofhis own Ignorance, is molt welcome toChrift. Such !hall ever be taught of GOD; and who (fays Elihu to yob) teacheth like him ? * He makes his People wife unto Salvation; for, ofGOD he is made unto themWifdotn itfelf. There is nothing needful for them to know, which they !hall not know by him. This lhould be Matter of Comfort to the ignorant Chriftian ; to one who is littleacquainted with what theWorld calls Know- ledge. Let him be affured, that his Meafure of Know- ledge is according to GOD's Will ; and, if it were for GOD's Glory, he doubtlefs would have known more. He knows enough favingly, that knows Cbrifl truly. And he, that knows nothing of Chrift by his Spirit and Power (whatever he may have learned befide), will be found hereafter to have been an egregious Fool. His Job xxxyi. za. L,ot
