I I N G. 32.i fcribed in the Perfons of Mofes, David, And others, for the Edification and Comfort of the antient Church; but none, but Jehovah, could fuftain all the Titles, which the Scriptures exhibit of an eternal Redeemer. GOD alone could perform what thofe Titles imply, as the neceffary Means of Inftruftion, Converfion, and Salvation, to loft Sinners. And it may be laid down as a Maxim, which has been, is, and will be corroborated by the Experience of GOD's People in all Ages ; that no Man, really and f ripturally convincedof the Weak- nefs, Depravity and Corruption of his Nature, and of the infinite Spirituality of GOD's righteous Law, can fee any true Profpelt of Help, or entertain any juft Hope of Salvation, but by the aftive and pafl-ive Obe- dience of an almighty, a divine, and an everlafting Saviour. The Man, who grounds a Hope upon any Objeét or Perfon lefs than this, refts upon a Creature. worfhips a Creature (which is Blafphemy, Idolatry and. Folly united), and confequently both oppofes the Re- velation of GOD, and deprives his own Soul of the Comforts refulting from it. The flighteft Infpeftion of the Bible, and even com- mon Reafon, Melt convince any Man, that Jehovah, the feif-exiflent GOD, is King and Ruler over Heaven, Earth, and all created Nature; and therefore it would be fuperfluous to confirm a Truth, which admits of no more Difpute than the plaineft Demonftration in Euclid. The Revelation that the Meab was to be King-, in the fame Senfe as Jehovah himfelf, is frequently found in the Old Teftament, and is exprefsly and repeatedly' confirmedby the New. Now, this would be impoffible and untrue, but upon the pofitive Ground of the Meffiah's Divinity, of his being Jehovah, or one of -the Perfons in the Godhead. Take away this Idea of hirrt but fora Moment, and his ÍKingfbip and Empire dwindle into the -Rank of a Vice-roy, -a Deputy, and a Province ; and the old Notion of the Heathens, that the Supreme GOD cannot attend himftlf to the Care and Burden of his own Creation, and therefore delegates Y that
