But the Ethiopia of the Old Teftament, which is wonderfully exalt in its Geography, was probably the general Name of that Tra& of Country, which reache's from Palefiine in the Weft to Per jia in the Eaft, including the greater Part of the prefent 4rabia. Thus Mofes, who married a Midianite, is Paid to have married an Ethiopian, Numb. xii. i. What is now called .Ethiopia, was very little known, and feems fcarce to have entered into the anti- ent Hiftory of the Jews. Mifraim, the Brother of Cufh, with his eight Sons (according to 7ofephus t)went down into and peopled Egypt. Phut, another Brother, was the Father of the Ethiopians and other Africans; § and Canaan, the fourth of this hopeful Stock, fettled upon that Traft of Country, which was the antient Mefopo- taraia, and was bounded by the Eaftern Extremities of the Mediterranean Sea. Cbusand Mifraim (par nobilefratrum) proved them- felves Brethren in Iniquity, as well as in Blood, and pro- pagated to their refpeftive Defcendants the idolatrous Tenets, derived from their Father.
