V. Nazarites

muff

not come neere the

dead

to

touch

them,

nor

defile

themfelves by

them;

nor meddle

with

the

funerals

of

father,

mother,

brother,

fihler,or

any

of

their

kinred,

though

they

might pretêd

never

fo

much

piety,affetzìion,or

good nature.

By

which Law

the

Lord

would

teach

them

two

things,

j.

That

no

changes

of

this

life, nor lotie

of

their

deareff

friends fhould

time

them

afide

from their

duty,

or from

the obfervation

of

the

Law

of

their profef1on.

To

teach

them

con

ftancy, patience, and magnanimity

of

fpirit

in the

grea-

teff

outward

affliftions,

and

not

to

Phew

a

weakneffeor

paffion

in

open or exce fïive

lamentation.

Our

Lord

al-

though

he

did

touch

the

dead, and

was

at

funeralls, and

wept

at the

rayfing

of

Lazarus,

and

fo

obferved

not the

ceremony

of

Nazarites,

becaufe

bee

was no

Legali

Na-

zarite,

but

was

called a

Nazarite

as

being

the

truth

and

fubffance

ofall the

Legali

Nazarites,

as

in

all

other

things

fo

in

this

For

he onely

the

had

the

true

command

of

all

his affettions;

never

exceeded

in

any

thing,

never

was

defiled

by any

perfon dead

in

time,

never

by

any

dead
