396 The Danger of all known Sin, both from `Vol. j j e f rs Chrif t, to all , and upon al them that believe, which is the Gofpel yy f U fritîcation, ver. 21, 22. But now the righteoufnefs of God without the lam is m J ì- fefted, being mitneffed by the law and the Prophets, even the righteoufnefs of God, which is by thefaith of yefus Chr, unto all, and upon all them that believe. The Righteoufnefs of Godwithout the Law is manifefled : that is, the way which God hath taken to juítifie Sinners, and declare them Righteous without the deeds of the Taro, that is, without obferving the Law of Mofes, is manifefled, that is, is clearly revealed in the Gofpel, (which is the fame with what the Apoftle had laid before, thatthe Righteoufnefs of God is revealed in the Gofpel) being witnefd by the Law and the Prophets, that is, the Righteonfnefs of God, or the Juftificati- on of Sinners by Jefus Chrift, is clearly revealed in the Gofpel, being alío in a more obfcure manner attelted or foretold in the Old Teftamenr, which he calls the Law and the Prophets; and this fully explains that difficult Phrafe ofthe Righ- teoufnefs ofGodbeing revealed by the Gofpel from faith to faith ; that is, i by a gra- dual Revelation, being more obfcurely foretold in the Old Teffament, and clearly difcovered in the New; fo that chele two paffages are equivalent; In the Gofpel, the Righteoufnef ofGod is revealed from faith to faith ; and the righteouf- nefs of God without the works of the law is rnanifefled, being witneffed by the law and the prophets. There is the firft and more imperfe&Revelation of it, but the clear Revelation of it is in the Gofpel ; this the Apoftle calls a Revelation from faith to faith, that is, from a more itnperfe& and obfcure, to a more exprefs and clear difcovery and belief of it. And then the Citation which follows is very pertinent, as it is written, The prfifhall live by Faith; for this Citation out of theOld Teftament plainly thews, that the way of Juftification by Faith was there mentioned; or, as our ApoftIe expreffeth it, was witneffed by the law and the prophets ; and confequently that this was a gradual difcovery, 'which he calls a Revelation from faith to faith. The 5ufl fhall live by Faith, that is, good Men fhall be faved by their Faith, (hall be jufifiedand efteemed Righteous in the fight of God, and finally faved by their Faith. And fo the Apoftle in the 5th Chapt. of this Epiftle, ver. 18. calls our Juftification by the faith of the Gofpel, the juflJcation of Life, inoppofition to Condemnation and Death, which very well explaie:..hat faying of the Prophet, the Juli fhall live by Faith. I have been the longer upon this, that I might give force light to a very difficult andobfcure Text. Secondly, The other Inflance whereby the Apoftle proves the Gofpel to be fo powerful a means for the recovery and Salvation of Men is, that therein alto the feverity of God againft impenitent Sinners, as well as his grace and mercy in the jurification of the penitent, is clearly revealed, ver. t8. For the wrath of God is revealed from Heaven, againfl all ungodlinefs and unrighteoufnef.e of Men, who hold the truth in nnrighteaufnefs ; becaufe that which may be knownofGod is ma- njeited in them, for God hath fbewn it unto them. The firft, viz. the Grace of God in our Juftifica, ion and the Remiffion of Sins patt, is a molt proper and powerful Argument to encourage us to Obedience for the future; nothing being more likely to reclaim Men to their Duty, than the affurance of indemnity for pa(t Crimes ; and the other is one of the molt effehtual Confederations in the, World to deter Men from Sin, that the wrath of God is revealedfrom Heaven againfi all ungodlinefs andunrighteoufnefs of Men, &c. From which words I (hall obferve thefe Six Things. Firtl, The infinite danger that a wicked and finful. Courfe Both plainly expofe Men to. The wrath of God is here faid to be revealed againfi the impiety and un- righteoufnefs of Men. Secondly, The clear and undoubted Revelation which the Gofpel bath made of this danger. The wrath ofGodagainft the Sins of Men, is faid to be revealed fromHeaven. Thirdly, That every wicked and vicious pra&ice doth expofe Men to this great danger. The wrath of God is Paid to be revealed againfi all nngndlinefs, and un- righteoufnefs ofMen. Fourthly,
