477 SERMON DM. f efut, theSonofGod, prov'd byhisRefurredion. RoM. 1.4-. Anddeclared to be the Son of God, with Poorer, according to the Spirit of Holinefr, by the Refurreïfion from thedead. T. Paul in the beginning of this Epiftle (according to his Cuttom in the reft ) Riles himfelf an Apoftle, particularly call'd, and let apart by God, for the preaching of the Gofpel5, the main Subjeet whereof was, 7efus Chrifl our Lord ; Who as he was, according tohis Divine Nature, the Eternal Son of God; fo according to his Human Nature, he was not only the Son of Man, but alto the Son of God. According to the Flefh ( that is, the Weaknefs, and Frailty, and Mortality of his Human Nature) he was the Son of David, that is of his Pofterity by his Mother, who was of that Houle and Line. Made of the feed of David, according to the Flelh, v. 3. But according to the Spirit of Holi- nefs ; (that is, in regard of that Divine Power of the Holy Ghoft, whichwas manifeft in him, efpecially in his Refurrettion from the Dead ) he was demon- flrated to be the Son of God ; even according to his Human Nature; Declared to be the Son of God, with Power, according to the Spirit of Holinefr, by the Referre- th on from the dead. All the Difficulty in the Words, is concerning the meaning of this Phrafe 5 of Chrilt's being declared to be the Son of God: The word is óec,9 vi ., which moft frequently in Scripture does fignify predeflinated, decreed, deteroaned ; but it likewife lignifies, that which is defined, declared, demonftra:ed, part out of all Doubt and Controverfy. And in this Senfe our Tranllation renders it. As if the Apoftle had Paid, that our Lord Jefus Chrift, though according to tl: Frailty and Weaknefs of his Human Nature, he was of theSeed of David; yet in ref- pe& of that Divine Power of the Holy Ghoft, whichmanifefted it felf in him, efpecially in hisRelurrefion from the Dead, he was declared to be the Son of God, with Power, that is, mightily, powerfullydemonftrated to be fo; fo as to put the matter out of all Dilpute and Controverfy. And therefore following our own Trantlation, I fhall handle the Words in this Senfe, as containing this Propofition in them: That the Refirrrellion of our Lord îefus Chrifi from the Dead, by the Holy Ghoft,. is a powerful demonflration that he was theSon of God. And it will conduce very much to the clearingof this Propofition to confider thefe Two things. Firfi, Upon what Account Chrift, as Man, is Paid to be the Son of God. Secondly, In what Senfe he is Paid to be declared to be the Son of God by his Re= ferretiion from the Dead. The Confideration of thefe Two Particulars will fully clear this Propofition, and theApoftles Meaning in it. Fill, Upon what Account Chrift, as Man, is Paid to be the Son of God. And for our right Apprehenfion of this Matter, it is very well worthy our Obfervati- on, that Chrift, as Man, is no where in Scripture laid to be the Son of God, but with relation to the Divine Power of the Holy Ghoft, fome way or other emi- nently manifefted inhim; I fay the Divine Power of the Holy Ghoft, as theLord and Giver of Life, as he is call'd in the Ancient Creeds of the Chriftian Church.
