Therefore you that! find, that Holinefs is joyned with all the Moral Perfeflionr of the Divine Nature, or put for them. Hof 9. 1 am the holy one in themalt of thee ; that is, the mercifulone. Pfal. 145 17: The Lord is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works. Rom. 7. tz. The commandment is holy, andjull, andgood. Rev. 317. Theft thingsfaith he that is holy, he that is true. Rev. 6. ro. How long, 0 Lord, holy andtrue ? Pfalm to5. 41. He remembredhis,holy promife ; holy, that is, in refpeét of the faithfulnefs of it. Ifaiah 55. 3. Thefare mercies of David ; Tá cage, the holy mercies of David, which will not fail. So that the Holinefs of God is not a particular, but an univerfal Perfe&ion, and runs through all the moral Perfedionsof the Divine Nature, 'tis the Beauty of the Divine Nature, and the Perfe&ion of all his other Perfections. Take away this, and you bring an univerfal flain and blemifh upon the Divine Nature ; with- out Holinefs, Power would be Opprefhon ; and Wifdom, Subtilty ; and Save- raignty, Tyranny ; and Goodnefs, Malice and Envy ; and Juftice, Cruelty ; and Mercy, Foolith Pity ; and Truth, Fallhood. And therefore the Scripture fpeaks of this, as, God's higheft Excellency and Perfeétíon. God is Paid to be glorious in Holinefs. Exod. r 5. 11. Holinefs is called God's Throne. Pfal. 47. 8. He ftteth upon the throne of hisholinefs. This is that which makes Heaven, Ifaiah 63. 15. It is called, The habitation of hisholinefs, and of his glory ; as if this wert the very Nature of God, and the fum of his Perfeétions. TheKnowledge of God is called the Knowledge of the holy one. Prov. 9. to. To be made partakers ofa Di- vine Nature, and to be made partakers of God's holinefs, are equivalent Expreflïons. 2. Pet. 1, 4. Heb. 12. to. And becaufe there is no Perfection of God greater, therefore he is reprefented as fwearing by this, Pfal. 6o. 6. Godhath fpoken in his holinefs. Pfal. 89. 3 5. Once have I ¡worn by my holinefs. The Angels and glori- fied Spirits they fum up the Perfections of God in,this, Ifa 6.3. And one cryed unto another, andfail, holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of bolls, the whole earth is full of hisglory. Rev. 4. 8. And they refl not day and night, faying, holy, holy, holy, LordGod Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. There is no Attribute of God fo often repeated as this ; in fome Copies it is nine times. II. I (hall endeavour toprove that this Perfeâion belongs to God ; Firfl, From the Light of Nature. The Philofophers in all their Difcourfes of God agree in this, that whatever founds like Vice and Imperfe Lion, into be fe- parated from the Divine Nature ; which is to acknowledge his Holinefs. Plato (peaking of our likenefs to God, faith, óuolmag; abcatop j fonov 1.07-2 peyvñasw; 44,864 Dan. 4.9. King Nebuchadnezzar calls God by this Title, I know that the fpirit of the holy Gods is in thee. In a word, whatever hath been produced to prove any of God's MoralPerfeétions proves his Holinefs. Secondly, From Scripture. There is no Title more frequently given to God in Scripture, and fo often ingeminated, as this of his Holinefs. He is called Holm nefs it felt, Ifa. 63. 15. Where Heaven is call'd the habitation of his Holinefs, that is, of God. His Name is laid to be Holy, Luke r. 49. And holy is his Name. He is called the holy one, Ifaiah 4o. z5. The holy one of Ifrael, Ifaiah 41. zo. The holy one of Jacob, 49. z ;. He is faid to be holy in all his Works and Promifes., Pfal. 105. 42.. In all his ways and works, Pfal. 145. r 7. This Title is given to each of the Three Perlons in the Bleffed Trinity : To God the Father in innu- merable Places : To God the Son, Dan. 9. 24. To anoint the moll holy. The De- vil cannot dc him this Title, Luke 4. 34. I know thee who thou art, the holy one of God : And the Spirit of God bath this Title contlantly given it, the Holy GboJi, or the holy Spirit, or the Spirit of Holinefs. The Scripture attributes this PerfeEtion in a peculiar manner to God, 1 Sam. z. z. There is none holy as the Lord. Rev. 15. 4. For thouonly art holy. Holinefs is a communicable Perfe&ion ; but
