278 Of the Gift of Tongues Vol. Il. therefore no Wonder, if there be a great Correfpondence between them, and that the Divine Providence should fo order the Event of Things, that the Seafons of difpenfing the greatEvangelical Bleflings, should happen at the fame Times, when the great Bletfings of the Law, which were the Types of them,'were difpenfed and commemorated. Thus our Saviour, who was the Lamb of God, was fain and offer'd up at the fame Time that the Paffover was kept, and the Pafchal Lambwas flain and offer'd up among the 7ewe; and the Redemption of the World from the Slavery of Sin and Satan is celebrated by Chriftians, at the very fame Seafori of the Year, when the Deliverance of the Ifraelites from the Egytian Slavery was commemorated by them: And as at the Timeof Pentecofi (whichwas fifty Days after) the yews were appointed to rejoice before the Lord, and tooffer their Firft- fruits by way of grateful Acknowledgment to God for the Fruits of the Earth, then newly gathered in; to did God likewife at the fame Time impart the Firft- fruits of the Holy Spirit to the Apoftles, who were to be the firft and chief La- bourers in that Spiritual Harveft, to which they were appointed by the Lord of the Harvell : And which is yet more remarkable, at the fame Seafon that the Law was delivered to the yews from Mount Sinai, and the fires Covenant eftablifh'd, namely, at the Time of Pentecofl, as is commonly füppofedby the yeroifi Do&ors, and as may probablybe colledted from the Text, Exod. 19. r. I fay, at that very Time, the Gofpel, which contains theTerms of the New Covenant, began to be rublifh'd fromMount Sion, in as wonderful, tho' not fo terrible a Manner, as the Law was given from Mount Sinai. And thus it was foretold by the ancient Pro ph¢rs, Ifa. 2. 3. and Micah 4. 2. that out of Sion fhouldgo forth the Law, and the Weird of the Lardfrom yerufalem. I (ball briefly explain the Words, and as I pafs along make fome fhort Obfer vations ppon them, and then fix upon that which is mainly intended in them; viz. This fires and moft miraculous Gift of the Holy Ghoft, which was conferred upon the Apoftles when they were afíèmbled together at Jerufalem upon the Day p...:s'a of « Pentecofl. "Whit- When the Day of Pentecofl was fully come, that is, when the fifty Days after Eaffer fun ay. were fulfilled, upon the fiftieth Day, which was called the Day of Pentecoft, they were all with one Accord in one Place. They wereall, that is, all the Twelve Apoftles; for upon them it was that this Gift of Tongues was bellowed y becaufe theywere appointed to be the chief Publifhers of the Gofpel, having been Eye-witneffes of our Saviour's Miracles, and particularly of his Refurre&ion from theDead. There- is no mention of any other in this Chapter, but only of the TwelveApoftles, Ver. r¢. we find Peter and the Eleven fpoken of; and Ver. 37. it is faid that the Mul- titude, who were aftonißied at this Miracle, 'poke to Peter and the refi of theApoftles. They were all withone Accord in one Place. Unity is an excellent Qualification and Difpofition for the Holy Spirit of God and his Gifts; for which Reafon, the Peace and good Agreement of Chriftians is called by St. Paul, the verity of the Spirit, in the Bond ofPeace. When the Apoliles were ofone Heart, and one Mind, then the Holy Spirit of God came down upon them in this wonderful Manner. Ver. z. Andfuddenly there came a Sound from Heaven as of a rnfhing mighty Wind. As they were togetherwaitingfir thePromifeof the Father, all on theSudden there came a Sound, as of a thong Gufi of Wind. This was a fit Emblem of the Di- vine Spirit a for to this our Saviour had compar'd it, in his Difcourfe with Ni- codemus, John 3. 8. TheWindbloweth where itlifleth, and thou heareft the Soundthere- of; but canfi not tell whence it corned?, nor whither it goeth : f is every one that isborn' of the Spirit. As ofarufhing mighty Wind. To fignifieto us, that the Publication of the Gofpel was attended with the fame Divine Prefence and Power, that the givingof the Law' was ; but not with the fame Circumftances of Terror, which the Apoftle to the Hebrews defcribes, when he fets forth to us the Difference between Mount- Sinai and Mount Sion, that is, between the two Difpenfations of the Law and the Gofpel. Hebr. 12. 18,19, fpeakingof Mount Sinai, from which the Law wasgiven, re are not come, fays he, unto the Mount, that might be touched, and thatburned with Fire, nor unto Blacknef, and Darknef , and Tempefi, and the Sound ofa Trumpet, and the Voice of Words; that is, that terrible Voice of God, wherein the ten Words : of
