CHAPTER XX. 527 words to himself ; Mat. xxi. 42. and they are applied to him by the apostles Paul andPeter; Eph. ii. 20. "Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner -stone ;" and 1 Pet. î. 7. " The stone which the builders disallowed is made the head of the corner." 4. His persecution by princes and people is declared in Ps. ii. 1. " Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing ?" The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord, and against his anointed ; that is,' against his Messiah or Christ ; which was cited and ful- filled ; Acts iv. 26, 27. " when Herod and Pontius Pilate, and the people, both Gentiles and Jews, all rose up against Jesus of Nazareth, and put him to death." S. His hitter reproaches and suffering, and the manner. of his death is foretold by David in the xxii. and lxix. Psalms. la the beginningof the xxii. Ps. David by way of emblem in pro- phecy, speaks the words of Christ upon the cross, " My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Verses 16, 18. They pierced my hands and my feet : They partedmy garments among them, and east lots upon myvesture :" And that he was brought down to the dust of death ; Verse 15. All these things were fulfilled when they nailed his hands and feet to a cross, when they cast lots for his garments, and slew him; Mat xxvii. 35, 40. John xix. 23, 34. His reproaches and his cruel treatment are described farther ; Ps. lxix. 20, 21. " Reproach bath broken my heart, I am full of heaviness : They gave me also gall îòr my meat, in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink ;" Mat. xxvii. 48. 6. His resurrection from the dead. Ps. xvi. 10. " For thou wilt not leave ¡ny soul in hell, that is, in the state of the dead, neither wilt thou suffer thy holy oie to see corruption : that is, to lie long enough in the grave to he subject to rotten- ness : Thou wilt shew me the path of life." Now this was evi- dently fulfilled in Christ at his rising from the dead to life again before he had lain there three complete days; Acts ii. 3l and xiii. 33-38. 1 Cor. xv. 4. 7. His ascension to heaven attended with angels, his tri- umph over the devils, his receiving gifts from the Father, and his distribution of them to men, are foretold in Ps. lxviii. 17, 18. " Thechariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels ; the Lord is among them. Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive, thou hast received gifts for men ; yea, for the rebellious also, that the Lord God might dwell . among them." Which words are applied to our Saviour being ascended to heaven, and having led the devils captive, and bestowed gifts on men, viz. prophets, apostles, &c. for the ministry of the gospel, that God might dwell among men who beforè were rebellious against him ; Eph. iv. 8.
