530 A SHORT VIEW OF SCRIPTURE HISTORY. was called the evangelical or gospel prophet, because he fore- tels the greatest varietyof events that relate to him, viz. 1. That he should be born of a virgin. Is. vii. 14. " A virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel ;" which was explained and accomplished when the virgin Mary brought forth her son Jesus; Mat. i. 20-23. The name Emmanuel signifies., " God with us." 2. That he should be of the family, of Jesse or David, who shall be kingof Israel ; that his name shall be the mighty God, and his kingdom shall stand for ever; Is. xi. 10. " In that day there shall be a root of Jesse which shall stand for an ensign of the people ; to it shall the Gentiles seek;" Is. ix. 6, 7. "Unto us a Child is born ; unto us a Son is given ; the govern- ment shall be upon his shoulders, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God, the everlasting Fa- ther, the Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end : Upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it and to establish it withjudg- ment and justice, from henceforth, even for ever." 3. And yet that he should be rejected by many of theJews, and should be received by the Gentiles. Is. viii. 14. " He shall be for a sanctuary ; that is, a refuge for mankind : But for a stone of stumbling, and rock of offence to both the houses of Israel :" that is, both to Judah and Benjamin, who made up the Jewish nation ; or to the two kingdoms both of Judah and Israel, as they were distinguished in former times. Now this text is applied to Christ ; Rom. ix. 33. 1 Pet. ii. 8. His rejection by the Jews is foretold also in Is. lüi.1-3. Who bath believed, &c. But that the Gentiles, shall receive him for a Saviour and a king, Isaiah foretels in many places ; as chapter ztlix. 6, 7, " He shall be a light to the Gentiles, and salvation to the ends of the earth. To him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, that is, that nation of the Jews, kings shall look and arise ; princes also shall worship." Which must refer to the kings of the heathens, for the Jews had then no kings who worshipped him. Is. xlii. 1, 6. " Behold my servant whom I have chosen, mine elect in whom my soul de- ligbteth ; I have put my Spirit upon him, he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles." Tile same is repeated in several other chapters. Is. lii. 10. and lv. 4, 5. And speaking of the.Jews who rejected Christ, he saith in chapter lxv. 15. t' Ye shall leave your name for a curse to my chosen, for the Lord God shall slay thee, and shall call his servants by another name." 'rile name of a Jew is become like a word of reproach or curse among the christiáns, who now are the ser- vants of God. 4: That he should be full of the Spirit of God, ofwisdom, and knowledge, and piety, justice and goodness ; Is. xi. 1, 2.
