456 QUESTIONS CONCERNING Scotts. eras God, no more than that it does prove that Christ was the Father. Answer. If Christ has the same godhead as the Father, and if in these ancient appearances Christ came in the naine of the Father, as his representative, there is no great inconveni- ence not confusion if he weretaken for God the Father, speak- ing and acting in anti by the angel of the covenant, or Jesus Christ in his pre existent state : But there would be great con, 'fusion and inconvenience in Christ's assuming these divine stames, if he had not godhead belonging to pros, for then we should take a creature for God. 3. Several scriptures of the Old Testament, which arecited by the writers of the New Testament and applied to Christ, do most evidently refer to the great one God, the God of Israel, the Almighty, the Jehovah in the OldTestament, whom all that read the Old Testament before the days of Christ must suppose to mean God tile Father of all ; such as Ps. lxviii. I8. Thou hest ascended on high ; cited Eph. iv. 8. And Ps. xcvii. 7. Wor- ship hint all ye gods ; cited Heb. i. 6. and Ps. cii. 24, 25. 0 my God, Of old thou hast laid the foundations of the earth; cited N.eb. i. 10. And Isa. xl. 3, 1, 5. Prepare .ye the u;ay of the Lord ; cited Mitt. iii. 3. And Joel ii. 32. I17tosever'shall call at the name of the Lord shall he delivered ; cited Heb. xii. 26. And Tsa. Viii. 13, 11. Sanctify the Lord of hosts, add he shall be fora stone of stumbling ; Cited i Pet. ii. 6. 8. and several other places. Now we cannot suppose, that all the holy men before Christ were utterly mistaken in their application of these texts to God theFather, since there is a plain and proper sense wherein this application is true. And yet these texts are property applied to Christ, if we suppose the godhead of the Father and of Christ to be the same, and that the than Christ Jesus was the shekinah pr habitation of the great God intimately and personally united to hitn, at d`sorr;ade one Berson with hint, but still under the character offiliatten or mediation. And in this sense Christ was mmanuel, or God with us ; Mat. i. 23. Besides, let it be further considered, that the design of the áposties in the citation of these'texts, and the application ofMein to.Christ, was to prove the glory, dignity and divinegrandeur .of Idle complex person of Christ : But this citation of these texts, 4l4 the application of them to Christ, will scarce prove the god- head of Christ, unless he has the same godhead with that of the Father,: nor indeed will they prove the dignity or glory of the person of Christ any other way ; but as they skew that what was ppoken ofoh[ concerning the godhead of the Father must neces- sarily belong also to Christ. If Christ considered as God were another distinct spirit from the godhead of the Father, I think
