Book II.] HYMNS. C[X. CX. CXI. CXII. CXI[L 185 HYMN CIX. (L. M.)' Tke darkness of providence. 1 LORD, we adore thy vast designs, Th' obscure abyss of providence, Too deep to sound with mortal lines; Too dark to view with feeble sense. 2 Now thou array'st thine awful face In angry frowns without a smile: We thro' the cloud, believe thy grace, Secure of thy compassion still. 3 Thro' seas and storms of deep distress, We sail by . faith, and not by sight ; Faith guidesus in the wilderness, Thro' all the briars, and the night. 4 Deár Father, if thy lifted rod Resolve to scourge us here below, Still we must lean upon our God, Thine arm shall bear us safely thro'. HYMN CX. (S. M.) Triumph over death in hope of the re- surrection. 1 AND must this body die ? This mortal frame decay ? And must these active limbs of mine Lie mould'ring in the clay ? 2 Corruption, earth, and worms, Shall but refine this flesh, Till my triumphant spirits comes, To pat it on afresh. 3 Godmy Redeemer lives And often from the skies Looks down, and watches all my dust, Till he shall bid it rise. 4 Array'd in glorious grace Shall these vile bodies shine, And ev'ry shape, and ev'ry face Look heav'nly and divine. S These lively hopes we owe To Jesus' dying love: We would adore his grace below, And sing his pow'r above. e Dear Lord, accept thepraise. Of these our humble songs, Till tunes of nobler sound we raise With our immortal tongues. HYMN CXI. (C. M.) Thanksgiving for victory: or, God's dominion, and our deliverance. 1 ZION rejoice, and Judah sing, The Lordassumes his throne; Let Britain own the heav'nly King, And make his glories known. 2 The great, the wicked, and the proud, From their high seats are hurl'd ; Jehovah rides upon a cloud, And thunders thro' the world. 3 He reigns uponth' eternal hills, Distributes mortal crowns; Empires are fix'd.beneath his smiles, And totter at his frowns. 4 Navies, that rule the ocean wide, Are vanquish'd by his breath; And legions arm'd with pow'rand pride Descend to wat'ry death. 5 Let tyrants make no more preteiice To vex our happy land ; Jehovah's name is our defence, Our buckler is his hand. 6 [Long may the Ring, oursov'reign,li.ve To rule us by his word ; And all the honours he can give, Be offer'd to the Lord.) HYMN CXII. (L. M.) Angels ministering toChristand his saints. 1 GREATG5d! to what agloriousheight, Hast thou advanc'd the Lord thy Son? Angels in all their robes of light, Are made the servantsof his throne. 2 Before his feet their armies. wait, And swift as flames of fire they move, To manage his affairs of state, -' In works of vengeance or of love, 3 His orders run through all their hosts, Legions descend at his command, To shield and guard the British coasts, When foreign rage invades our land. 4 Now they are sent to guard our feet , Up to the gates of thine abode, Thro' all the dangers that we meet In travelling the heav'nly road. 5 Lord, when I leave this mortalground, And thou shalt bid me rise and come, Send a beloved angel down, Safe to conduct my spirit home. HYMN ÇXIII. (C. M.) the same. 1 THE majesty of Solomon, How glorious to behold The servants waiting round his throne, The iv'ry and the gold! 2 But, mighty God! thy palace shines With tar superior beams Thine angel - guards are swiftas winds, Thy ministers are flames. 3 [Soon as thine only Son had made His entrance on this earth,. A shining army downward fled To celebrate Isisbirth. 4 And when, oppress'd with pains and fears, On the cold ground be lies, Behold, a heav'nly form appears, T' allay his agonies.] 5 Now to -thehands of'Christ, our Tung, Are all the legions giv'n They wait upon his saints, and bring His chosen heirs to heav'n. 6 Pleasure and praise run through their hosts, To see a sinner turn; Then Satan has a captive lost, And Christ a subject born.. 7 But there's an hour of brighter joy, When he his angels sends,
