314 An Expofïtion upon CHAP. IX, Chap.9, DIALOGU &.I. Verf. 1, 2, 3. I fay the truth in Chrifh I lye not, my confci- ence braring me witnej%in the holy Ghoff, that I have,t c. T I M OT H P U 5. aar A, Hat doth the Apofile handle in this Chapter ? S 1 L. In this Chapter and the two following, .Paul en -. nrcateth of that great myftery of divine elc &ion and reprobation , and of the releition of the Jewes, and the voca- tion of the Gentiles dependingthere- on. T 1 rt. How doth he fall into this difpute and argument of Gods eternal! prédeftina- tion ? S n L. Of this, divers men judge diverfly: they all fo agree in the matter of his treatife, as yet they vary about the coherence and knitting of thefe three following Chapters to the for- mer. Some think that he climbeth up to the myffery ofele&ion, that he may lay forth the fountain of faith and jufli- fication ; and fo prove them to be free and independent upon us. Others fay, this depends on Chap.3.verf29. where the Apoflle having proved righteouf- neffe by faith, now he fetteth on the other thing to prove that it comes without re(pe& of perfons, both to Jew and Gentile which beleeve, and that ac- cording to elt&ion. Others fetch the coherence from verle 30. or 38, 39. of the eight Chapter, thus : If God will glorifie whom hee foreknew, and the faithful cannot be feparated from Gods love;how comes it that the Jews whom God foreknew once, and which are Gods onely people , are now cafl out and repelled from grace and glory ?Cln- to which he anfwereth ; that all which be Jews by carnali generation , be not the people of God unto whom the promifes do belong, but the ele& alone, whether Jews or Gentiles. But I take it rather this to be the reafon of the con- nexion, that againft the former do- &rine of juffificatioti by faith,theunbe- leif of the Jews might be obje &ed thus: If Pauli doEìrine be true (which hither- to he bath taught, of the right way of being jutfifitd and faved through faith in Chriff) why doe not the Jews ap- prove and embrace it ?Either the Jewes are none of Gods people,or the do&riri and promifes of grace belong to them ; if not to them, then how is God faith- full in keeping promife, feeinghefaid he would be their.God ? Lltkto which the Apoftle anfwereth, that the Jews obtained not righteoufnetfe and falva- tion by Chrifl; becaale many of them were unbeleevers. The reafon of this is, becaufe they were reprobates ; for fuch as were ele& did beleeve and were jul11- fed and faved, which is fuflicientto prove God true of his promife, which was never made but to Abrahams fpiri- tuall feed, not to fuch as came of him according to the fle(h. T 1 M. What bee the parts of this Chapter S t L. Three: Ffrfl, a grave prote- ' fiation of Paul,' forrow , in behalf of the Jews which beleeved not in Chrifi, unto verfe 6. Secondly , a defence of Gods promife againff humane reafon, to verf.24. Thirdly, adeclaration of the rnyf}ery touching the calling of the Gentiles, and refuting of the Jewes, by the Oracles of the Prophets, which did foretell the one and the other to the end of the Chapter. T1 M. Why did Paul begin with prote- flatisn of his farrow ? S s L. To avoid the offence of the Jews, who were likely to take indigna- tion at this do &rine ; therefore bee ufeth an infinuation to gain their good will
