Verf.6, 7, 8. the Epiffle to the Romans. 2 Dolï. Faith pro- perty taken is not our jelicc be- fore God. Adoubt. Solut ion. Therefore Lyw and Gofpell to be d&ai n. pollhta by the name of doe rine and not by books. Vfes. T i M. What may we learn from theft farff words? S i L.That a lively faith is neceffarily required as an inftrument to receive true righteoufneffe before God. Secondly, whofoever is indued with this faith, hath that righteoufneffe which God al- lowed: of in juffice; not that faith (as it is a quality, a worke, or gift, is this juftice) but becaufe God imputeth to faith the juftice of his Son Chrift, whieh alone is able to appeafe him, and to a- bide the rigour of his law, which faith as a work cannotdo. T o M. What may we learn by this, that Paul confirmes the doïirine of free righteeuj- ne Ire by faith, out ofMoles hir writings ? S o L. That Paul the Apoftle and Mofes writings, had good agreement in die do&rine of the Gofpell. Secondly, that the righteoufneffe of faith hash witneffe from the Law and the Pro- phets. Thirdly, that Mofes knew and preached the Gofpell as well as the Law; hence it is that Moles Law doth oftentimes fignifie the whole do&rine of God, as Pfal. 19. 7. T t M. Why then is Mofes accounted a Preacher of the Law, and set againft the Apofiles and Chrift, the preachers of the Gofpell ?John 1. 57. S L L. Mofes had this denomination of that which he did for the most part, and that was to publish Sand expound the Law to the people : howbeit the pro- mises, of grace are contained in his writings alfo , and he prophefied of Chriff, John 5. 46. For Moses wrote of me : even as Chrift and his Apostles did preach the Law and urged repens tance, Marke I. 15. Yet becaufe their chíefeff endeavour was to fet forth the promises of grace, they are therefore called the Minillers of grace, and dif- penfers of the Gofpell. T I M. Whatofa ofttis point? S i L. It ferveth to draw the Jerves the sooner to embrace the righteouf --1 neffe offaith, since it was taught by Mo- fes, a Prophet whom they much honou- red and refpe&ed, and yet refuting to beleeve in Chrift, even for that they thought thereby to be drawne away from this Mofes; whereas Paul tels them that there is no fuch matter, if they would beleeve Mofes : but contrarywile they muff receive Chrift, whom he preached : as 'John Baptiti , fo Mofes prepared Difciples for Chrift , he one more, the other leffe clearely. T r M. But howmay it appeareto us, that Mofes in this teftimony did Jpeake of Chrift and the Gofpell ? S I L. Firft, out of Mofes words, Deut.3o. 6, 11. the promifes of conver- fion of God, and circumcilion of the heart are parts of the Gofpell ; and this was the commandement, and not the legali precepts which that day he fpake, Secondly, out of Paul, who in this place tearmeth the word which Mofes fpake, to be the word of faith, verfe B.Thirdly, ìfPaut had ufed this text of Moles by allufion, agreement or proportion only (as if fuch words as were fpoken by Mofes touching the Law, might fitly be applyed by Paul to the Gofpell,) then had not they ferved the purpofe of the Apoftle; which was toconfirme by te- stimony of Mofes, that which he had fpoken before touching Chriff, being the end of the Law for righteoufneffe to him that beleeves. They are then decei- ved which thinke that Paul alludeth to Mofes, citing him by way of confe- quence and not dire &ly; or that he doth fpeak of the bare knowledge or performance of the Law,either by na- tural] ftrength, or as it is made cane by grace: for then Paul should not :have fpoken of righteoufnelfe by faith, but of fan &ification and newneffe oflife;which is quite betides the drift and fcop, which is out of Mofes to commend the righ- teoufneffe of faith, as is very plain in the text. T t M. But the Apostle loth not repeat Mofes words? S r L. True, not in fo "many letters and fyllables, for fomething is altered, alto added and taken away; but in fenfe and meaning he doth alledge them, and that is sufficient. TIM. What is Meant by [saying in thy heart ?} S r L. Thus much : thinke not L 1 3 doubt 3 >z Doubt. Solution. brterprPl` tattoo. 1
