Vet{ 13. the Epif le to the R.oman s. 45 7 Affum- ption. Conclufi- on. Interpre- tation. DoÉfririe. Reaf on. 7J fe. fell, fo I in my Do &rine have propoun- ded this end, that the Jewes might be brought at la(1 to delire grace, and be fàved by means of that grace given to the Gentiles : Therefore it is certain, that at the lati many Jewes (hall be fa ved : Otherwife the end both of Gods decree, and my doetrine, fhould be fru- ftrate, which cannot be. T 1 M. Vpon what grounds dash Paul comfort the jewes in the 14. verfe? S r L. Upon thisground, that teeing reconciliation carne to the world of the Gentiles by their fall, therefore howfo- ever their cafe feems to be defperate, asofdeadmen, yet God will quicken them, that they may be partakers of the common reconciliation. T I M. Why Both Paul call himfcl f the [Apoflle of the Gentiles ?] S r L. Becaufe he was of God, ap- pointed to be a preacher to the Gentiles, as Peter was to the Jewes, Gal. 2. 7, 8. I 7irn.2. 7. T t M. Wherefore doth Paul dire£t his fpeech to the Gentiles in this fort ? S I L. By this infinuation to creep into their mindes, and the more to knit their heart to him, as one that was or- dained to fet forwards their falvation. T What is the Doitrine from hence 1 S s L. That Minifters of the word muff take all occalions to witneffe their love to their flock. And fecondly, that at behoves the people to be perfwa- ded of the goodaffe&ion of their Tea- chers towards them. The reafon here- of is, becaufe the Do&ine of godlineffe will more eafily pierce the mindes of the hearers, if they be well affe &ed to- wards their teachers: which made the Spirit of God in the Scriptures , to charge both Min itiers to behave them -, felves mildely, as Paftors, Fathers, and'; NnrCes amongft the people; and their people to have their teachers in fingu lar love for their works fake. T 1 M. What ufe of this doiirine ? S I L. It ferves to warn Ghriftians to beware, left by Satans fitggeffions, their own corruption, or counfell of the wicked, any fluffier bad conceit be ei- ther dropped into,or entertained in the ¡alludes concerning their Teachers : for by this means their do&rive will be- come of none ette&, and their falva- tinn will be greatly hundred. Thefe things, God,Chrift, GoCpell,Teachers, Salvation are fo linked together, as to defpife one, is to deTife all : honour one, and honour all. T 1 M. What doth this word [ magni fie ] import ? S t s.. Sometimes it lignifies to make known the g-reatneffe and glory of a- nother, Lull 1.46. but here it is to ho- nour,or to makeglorious his oflice, that is, his Miniftry of Apolllefhip. The do- &rine is, that it behoveth a Minifter to honour his fun &ion. T 1 M. Wherein doth hand the honour and glory o f the Minifiery ? S I L. In fund,y things : Firft, fait-inland-le, when Minifters both live robe Dada and teach well, t Cor.4.2.it is the credit'bte; °°'- ofStewards to be faithtull and crafty. Secondly, in patient frittering tribula- tions for the Gofpell, 2 Cor. 6. 4,5, &c. Thirdly, by diligence in preaching the Miniftry is much adorned, i Cor. 9. Laftly, by the good fucceffe of prea= ching, when thereby many are conver- ted unto Chrift. This lati is meant here, as appears by the words of the next verfe, that Fault meaning is, that this would be the honour of his Miniflery, that he might fo preach to the Gen - tiles,as he might win fame of the Jewes alfo : as the glory and fteength of a King conffis in the number of worthy fubcas, fo the number of good Scho- lars is the honour of their Teachers : that made the holy shots to fay in the Ali!, that the word of God grew and was glorified, when many were turned to the Faith by the preaching of it; for to convert finners to righteoufnefl-e, is a greater matter then to work wonders, nay then to make a world : therefore both the word and the preachers ofit are not a little honoured, when by found preaching, many are brought to repentance and amendment oflife. T t M. What profit may we talee to our feint's by this Doi trine ? S I L. It confutes fuck men as plfe. thace a V t Interpre- tation. Doc7rine.
