232 The NEW and COMPLETE LIFE of our BLESSED LORD with increafing zeal, reign in my brealt." When we partake of this facred ordi- nance, fuch are the views that fhould poffefs our fouls : but it will fignify little to entertain thefe views at that time, un- lefs the effeas of them are apparent in our future condua and converfation; for a tranfient flow of affeftions or (allies of immediate delight were not principally in- tended in this ;inftitution. The bleffed JEsus did not ordain it as a ceremony or charm, but as a proper method of efta- blifhing our hearts in virtuous and pious difpofitions. Though ye have, therefore, O Chriftians ! obeyed the Redeemer's command in this appointment, and found your paffions greatly moved, yet this is not the whole required at your hands ; it will juftly be expelled, that ye fhould live to the honour of your divine Mailer. As you have folemnly profeffed your faith in him, and your love towards him, the reality of your faith and love fhould be demonftrated by walking more ftrillly in the way ofhis precepts, and by abounding in that heavenly chat-al-ter and temper which his fpotlefs example fo engagingly recommends : thus only will the facrament become fubfervient to the molt beneficial purpofes ; thus only will it be inflrumental in qualifying us for fharing in the dignity and felicity poffeffed by our exalted Savi- our. May, therefore, all the followers of the immaculate Jesus, advance from holi- nefs to holinefs, till they arrive at the regions of eternal felicity, by uniting to- gether at his facred table. Having thus inflituted his laft fupper, our bleffed Saviour was deeply affefed with his own thoughts ; and after delivering the facramental cup, telling them that his blood was flied for them, he mentioned the treachery of Judas a fecond time : But, behold, the hand of hint that betrayeth one is with one on the. table. This fecond de- claration was made veryproperly after the innitution of the facrament, which exhi- bits the higheft inflance of our great Re- deemer's love to mankind, his dying to obtain the remiffion of their fins ; for it abundantly proves, that the perfon who could deliberately be guilty of fuch an in- jury to fo kind a friend mull have been a monfler, the foulnefs of whole ingratitude cannot be reached by the force of lan- guage. Some of the difciples, particularly !truck with horror at the thought 'of Judas's treachery, rebuked him, by afking him with furprife, how he could betray his Mailer? This accufation Judas, no doubt,,,,,, repelled by impudently denying the fall; but confcioufnefs of guilt, giving edge to the reproaches of his brethren, and to every circumftance ofthe affair, he, think- ing himfelf affronted, immediately left the company exceedinglydifpleafed. Our bleffed Saviour's fufferings were now at hand : the traitor Judas was gone to the chief priefts and elders, for a band of foldiers to apprehend him ; but this did not difcompofe the Redeemer ofmankind; he took occafion to meditate on the glory that would accrue both to himfelf and to the Almighty from thofe fufferings, and fpake of it to his difciples: hThw, faid he, is the Son ofnzan glorified, andGod is glo- rified in hint. He alfo told them, that having already done honour to his Fa- ther by the pall anions of his life, and being about to honour him yet further by his fufferings and death, which would dif- play his perfellions, particularly his infinite love to the human race, in the moil allo- nilhing and amiable light, he was in his turn to receive hopourfrom the Almighty; intimating that his human nature was to be exalted to the right-hand Of Omnipo- tence, and that his million fromGod was to be fupported by irrefragable attellations. But his difciples, imagining that he fpake of the glory ofa temporal kingdom, their ambition was again revived, and they be- gan to difpute with as much keennefs as ever, which of them fhould be greaten in that kingdom. This contention Jesus compofed by the arguments he had for- merly ufed forthe fame purpofe. Amonglt the
