Spiritual Peace and Comfort. 149 My end in telling you this again (which ñ have told you elfewhere) is this That you may not think (as I find abundance of poor troubled fouls to do) that Faith (much lefs Juilifying Faith) is a believing that you have true Grace , and (hall be faved ; And fo fall a condemning your felf unjuftly every time that you doubt of your own Sincerity ; and think that fo much as you doubt of this fo much unbelief you have : and fo many poor fouls complain that they have no faith , or but little , and that they cannot be. lieve, becaufe they believe not their own Faith to be Sincere and when they wholly judge themfelves unfandified, then they call that Defpe- ration, which they think to be a fin inconfiftent with trueGrace. Thefe are dangerous Errours, all arifing from that one Errour which the heat ofcon- tentiondid carry Tome good men to, that Faith is a belief teat our fins are forgiven by Chrift. In- deed all men are bound to apply Chrift and the Pro- mile to themfelves. But that Application confiíleth in a belief that this Promife is true as belonging to all, and fo to me, and then in Acceptance of Chrift and his benefits as an offered gift ; and after this in truf{ing on him for the full performance of his Pro- mife. Hence therefore you may bell` fee what Un- beliefand Defperation are, and how far men may charge themfelves with them. When you doubt whether the Promife be True , or when you re- fute to Accept Chrift and his Benefits offered in ir, and confequently to Trust him as one that is Able and Willing to fave you , if youdo Affent to his Truth and Accept him ; this is Unbelief.
