Reafbn is an Effential Faculty of Man; and by it we are direaed why toBelieve, and what things are reveal'd as objeEs of Faith. To believe, and not to un- derffand the rea%ri of our belief, is to turn Faith into Folly and Extravagance. The Men of Samaria were firft induced to believe in Chriff, for the teflimeny of the woman that told them, Come and fee the man that hms toldme all that ever Idid : but when they heard Chrifc (peak, they faid, Naiv we believe, not for thy words, forwe haveheard, andknow, that he is the true Saviour of the World. The Under- ffanding is corvinc'd by reafon of the Divinity of the Scriptures : and as a pole fupports a Vine, but does not give Life and Vertue to its Root, fo Reafon afíifts Faith in direaing it to the Scrip- tures, the Rule of it, but Faith in the Myfteries of the Gofpel derives its Life from God the Author of them.
