The Crucifyingof the world, own intereft, in alihis works , even in the collation of his freeft grace. And therefore he will be glorified in all his Saints, and no man fhall have, falvationdividedly from his honour. He_dotlt not bring men to heaven to hate andcontemn him but to love and praife him ; and he will fit them for that work before they come thither, and make them love and praife him in'tially on earth,be- fore they come to do it in ;heaven. And therefore he will make them contemnall thofe things that ftand incompetition with him, and hate all that ftands againft him. 'SE CT. X. i. IHave ewed .the neceflityof'crucifying the wo;`ld , as from ilh Gods intereft, which theworld doth contradict; I íhall next thew it you fromyour own interelt. And in thefe conjund con- diderations it will appear. 1. The world is not Your happinefs. 2. The world is occafiona.11y through the corruption of our na- ture, a great enern to your happinefs. 3. God only is your happinefs. 4. God is not fully to be enjoyed in thisworld. S. It is by knowing, loving and delighting in him as God, that he is to be enjoyed to make us happy. 6. As therefore it is impofsible to have two ultimate ends, two chief goods, and ro enjoy them both, fo is itimpofsible, that God and the world fhould. both bave our chiefeft eflirnarion and affection. All this fet together doth demonfirate thenecefsity of being crucified to the world, unlefs we will renounce our own felicity. a. For the firft Propofition ; that the world is not your Hap- pinefs ; I think all your tongues will readily cotfefs it , I wouldyour hearts.would do fo too. Do you think that God loth envy youyour happinefs, or that he would take the world from you, becaufe he efteemeth it toogood foryou ? No, it is becaufe he pittieth your felf-deceit : when he-feeth you take that for your happinefs that is not; and becaufe he hash far better things tobeftow. If the world were as good for y au asyou take itto be, and had that in it to fatisfie you , as you imagine it to have, you might keep it, and muchgood might it do you ; for God would not be about to take it fromyou He that madeyou Co be Happy, Bothnot grudge you that which Ihould procure ir.
