Firft,

then

we

that

above

labour

of

er

faith,

our

about

this.

This

then

is

his

Commandement, that

we believe

in

the

name

of

his

Son Jefus

Chrift. This

is

Gods Commandement wherewith

wee

are

charged.

For

nothing

is

fo glorious

to God.

john

3.33.

It doth

give

God

a

tcftimoniall,as it were

of

his

truth,

and fealeth

that

he

is

true

:

and for

our

felves,

the holy Ghoft

makerh

all

our riches

to

come

in

of

it. Iam.2.5.

The

poore, God hath

chofen to

be rich

in

faith

;

not

onely

that,

faith it felfe

is

a

precious pearle, but becaufe

that by

faith

we have

all chofe

unfearchable riches

of

Chrift'

our

Lord

:

and

the

manner

of

our delivery

doth

Phew us

plainly,

what

care

we mull have

of

ir.

Forif

we bid

a

fervant buy many

things,

but above all,

fuch a

thing

;

he would

gather what

he fhould be

mot/

carefull

in

:

So here

get

other things,

but above all, faith.

Thus Paul,

Gad.

a. ao. Thus

now

I live

by the faith, &c.

and Heb.t

t.

All thofe Saints pleafing

God,

had this beljefc

towards him.

Now

then

to

the doing

ofthís,

wee

muff labour

to

ferret

out our

anbeliefe. Secondly.

,

u

enkindle

and

renew

our

dying

faith,

and

encreafe

it

:

the

firff

we

fhall

fnde

theft

waies.

Firft,

markehow we are affeitad tothe word

ofthreatning;whether

it breed

in us

feare, andcarefull declining

of

finne.

If

ye live

after the

flefh

ye flail

die.

If

this

were believed, we dud!

as

well take

a

Beare

by

the

tooth,

as

give

the

raines

to

our corruptions.

Who

is

fo

hardy

as

to

thruft

his

fingerinto

the

fire

a

butwe oftenthough we know nothing,

let our

felves

be

carried with lulls

through

unbeliefe;

Secondly, let

us

marke

how

we

are

affetied to

the

promife.

We

fee , becaufe

by

a

civili

faith we

beleeve man,

therefore,

if

we have a mans

word

,

for

this that

was defperate, we are

glad, we

fecke

to get

fecurity.

If

we

have

bonds

we

box them

up;

we know , when

they

expire

,

what to

chalenge by verrue

ofthem. Now

for

the

promife

of

God

,

which

fccureth

us

of

all

good temporal!,

and eternal!,

who enquireth

after

it,

who

feekerh

it

in his

heart, who rejoyceth

in

it, who faith,

I

looke for

fuch

a

thing,

by verrue

of

fuch

a

word,

my

God hath

fpoken

!

which

argueth

we

are

full

of

unbeliefe

e

Thirdly,

our

reflingin

meanes, and

leaning to them.

For,

fo

much

as

the

heart

cloth

refs

on

the creature,it

is

by

fin

withdrawne from the

Creator.

But

howmay

tre

;ode

this?

By

marking

boas

it

is

with

us three waies.

Ftrft,

if

we

ofed

means,

as

not

ufrng

them,what

meanes foever we

had, our

feare and

truftto God

would

be the

fame

as

if

wee wanted

them

:

For wewould know, that further then God did

fend

forth

his

word,they

could doe

nothing.

Secondly,

if

wee did our duties, and meanes were wanting, wee

would

be confident;

(till

remembring that

of

Ionathan

,

It

is

all one

with God, to

fave

with many, or with

few ; with fmall

meanes,

as

great,

Thirdly,

when

wee have things wee would thinke little

of

any

meanes;

but

afcribe

all

to

Gods

blef

ling.

Now

we doe

the contrary

to

chele

:

For

if

wehave meanes, upon them we

are fecure

s

as a

man
