8 The Covenant of Works Chap. S. we are not taken out of the hand ofDifcipline : See with what emphafis the Apoffle puts it; ?efits that delivers from the wrath to come, r Theffi r, io. As for thofe that reafon from Chrifts fa- tisfa &ion, to acquit all beleevers from correction ; the Socinianr in a counter- difpute have the advantage:If Chrift have fatisfiedfor fin then thofe that have theirintereit in Chrift cannot be cor- refted or chaflifed for fin, fay one party, The other may affume and eafily prove that they that have intereftiñ Chriff, are corre ic- ed for fin, therefore Chrift bath not fatisfied for fin. And thofe of this party in this argument have the advantage;feeing when we plead for Chrifis fatisfacgion, we have the thing in Scripture, but not the word. But in pleading for the correction and chaffife- ment for fin, we have both the word and thing. But thefe clear Scripture- truths may be eafily reconciled , Chrift bath paid the price of our ranfome ; but the whole of the priviledge is not at once applied , but by degrees conferred. And as long as there is fin in G them, od exercifèsDifcipline over them; being in grace, by his word and rod he leads them on to glory ; He chafi?eneth e. very (on that he receiveth, Heb. 12, 6. A fourth Pofition which here might he premifed is; That there is a fingular fuitableneffè in thefe conditions of the Covenant of Grace to mans fallen eflate for his reparation , as there was in the conditions of the Covenant of Works an anfiverable (isitableneire to man in his integrity for his prefervation. In the Covenant of Works Sove- reignty was exercifed , and homage required , without the kaft dilpenfation or indulgence in cafe of failing ; now feemingly hard, but then indifputably equal : Now Sovereignty is exercif- ed as then, and homage required ; ( God never layes this afide in dealing with his creature) but with that condefcenfion and moderation as was neceffary in dealing in a Covenant -way with one in an eftate without ffrength, as will further be made ma- nifeft.
