Now thole Lampes are called thefeven Spirite ofGod, both becaufe they aregifts which flow from that Spirit, and for that there is a molt neer conjunction of the effei1 with his caufe. For they are thofe moft fweet fruits which the Spirit createth in the hearts of the Sainte, beftowing, Faith, Hope, Charity, Peace, Joy, Prayer, and the reft wherewith the eleft are fanftified. They are likened to the Lampes of fire, according to the rite of the lights in the Temple, which were every day to be fet on fire by Aaron andhis Sores, Exod. 27. 20. For the Spirit will have himfelf to be kindled in the hearts of the elect, by the labour of the Minifters through the Word and Sacraments; neither will he be expefted to come be- fides the.order deliverer{ by himfelf. The number of thefe Spirits is feven fold, according to the ma- nifold variety of the gifts wherewith, headorneth the faithfult, as -every where wee fe this number ufed, to note out an indefinite *umber. Laft of al!, thefe gifts are compared to fire ; For they are Lamps of fire burning before the Throne Becaufe they do in- lighten the miede, do burne up the ftubble of in-borne cor- ruption , and do moreover inflame the miede with a delire of all godltned , which ?ohn calleth the Baptifme offire, Mat. 3. rr. Now how great comfort arifeth hence , that the name of the Spirit is given to thefe gifts ; which are (faith he) the {evenSpi- rite of God. By which words the faithful! may underftand, that that power which they feel to be furred up by God in their hearts, is a molt undoubted pledge of God himfelf dwelling in us.
