144 Glel-Converfation. betwen one Officer and another ofthe fame kind in the Church as in the State : Nuw the State may limit their Officers as they pleafe, in fome Countries they may make Juftices of the peace for one ufe, and in another Country for another ufe, they may limit them according as they pleafe, how they fhall execute their places, and when they mutt leave their offices to others : But in the Church, one Paftoi (whatfoever hebe) hath as much power of Chrirt in him as any that live, for as there can be no newOf- fices in this Kingdom of Chrift but by Divine Inftitution,fo there can be no limitation oftheir Office but according to the Inftituti- on ofJefus Chrift. So His Kingdom is not ofrhis World. It's true, if fo be that the Magiftrate fhall come in by Law to help the Church, fo farr as they fhall come in to give Civil help to the Church they may appoint Officers, to fee that their power be not abufed ; but not any that are properly Church Officers, to adminifter any fpirituall Ordinances in the Church, but fuch as are by Divine inflitution. Seventhiy, The KingdomofChrift is not ofthis World; the wea- pons by which Chrift doth fight with His adverfaries to main- tain his Kingdom, are not the weapons of the world ; in that notable Scripture 2 Cor. ro.4, 5. For the weapons ofour warfare are not carnal, butmighty through God, to the pulling down of f rang holds, calling down imaginations,andevery high thing,that exalteth it Pelfagainfi the knowledg of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience ofChrif. Mark,here's theweapons of the KingdomofChrift, Chrift brings into captivity every thought, carts down firong holds, whatfoever strong holds,or high thing is lifted up againrt theKingdom of Chrift, Chriftbath weapons in His Kingdom tocall it down ; but faith he, the weapons of our warfare ( there is a warfare) they are not carnal but fpi- ritual . Chrift in his Kingdom He doth not appoint carnal weapons He gives not unto his Church weaponsof the flefh, to make men beleeve whether theywill or no.
